Oil boiler service in Cardiff
Very few Cardiff homes heat with oil, but those that do need a yearly service from an OFTEC registered technician.
Oil heating is rare in Cardiff. The 2021 Census counted only 209 households, 0.1% of the city, heating with oil alone. They are homes the gas main never reached, so if yours is one of them, book well ahead of winter when OFTEC technicians get busy.

Who uses oil in Cardiff
Oil is the fuel of homes beyond the gas network. The largest cluster in the city is in Pentyrch and St Fagans ward, where 83 households heated with oil alone in 2021, against single figures in most inner wards. Another 829 Cardiff homes use tank or bottled gas, which an LPG-qualified Gas Safe engineer services instead.
If you have recently bought an off-gas home, ask the seller for the last service record and the tank's age. That tells the technician what to expect.
What the service covers
The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and filter, checks the electrodes and tests the combustion with an analyser. They should also check the flue and the fire valve on the supply line.
Ask for an OFTEC CD/11 service record. It is useful for insurance and for selling the house.
Before the visit
Make sure there is enough oil in the tank for the technician to run and test the burner. Clear the area around the boiler and the tank, and have the last service sheet ready.
The tank
Look at the tank for cracks, bulges or rust, and check the bund if there is one. A leaking tank can pollute soil and water and is expensive to clean up. The technician can carry out a tank inspection at the same visit.
Changing fuel
If your home is off the gas grid, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, plus an extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG until March 2027. Nest can also help eligible lower-income households. Read our heating oil prices guide to compare costs.

Questions people in Cardiff ask
Is a yearly oil service really needed on the edge of Cardiff?
Once a year. Oil burners build up soot faster than gas, so a skipped year shows in efficiency.
Will my usual Cardiff gas engineer service an oil boiler?
Only if they also hold OFTEC registration. Gas Safe registration covers gas work only.
Is a carbon monoxide alarm needed with an oil boiler?
Yes, it is wise in any home with a fuel-burning appliance. In rented homes in Wales, landlords must fit one in a room with an oil-fired appliance they supplied.
