Oil boiler service in Swansea
Nearly 2,000 Swansea homes heat with oil. We pass your request to OFTEC registered technicians who work in Swansea, Gower and the Swansea Valley.
Oil heating matters more in Swansea than in most Welsh cities. The 2021 Census counted 1,959 households heating with oil alone, 1.9% of the county. On the Gower ward the share was 43.8%, and Clydach, Pennard, Pen-clawdd, Llangyfelach and Fairwood each had dozens to hundreds of oil-heated homes.
Swansea at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 80.3% of Swansea households heat with mains gas only and 5.6% with electricity only. 1,959 homes (1.9%) rely on oil alone and 1,066 (1.0%) on tank or bottled gas. Source
- Off-gas Gower
- In the Gower electoral ward, 43.8% of households (540) heated with oil alone in 2021 and 15.5% with tank or bottled gas. Clydach (308 homes), Pennard (155) and Pen-clawdd (149) also have sizeable numbers on oil. Source
- Nest scheme
- Nest pays for heat pumps, insulation or solar panels for Welsh owner-occupiers and private tenants who get a means-tested benefit or have a low household income, where the home's EPC score is 54 or less (68 or less with a qualifying health condition). Source
- Training
- Gower College Swansea offers a Gas and Central Heating Engineer Level 3 apprenticeship leading to Gas Safe registration in CCN1 and CENWAT, plus a gas managed learning programme, OFTEC oil training and assessment, and LPG courses. Source
What a full service includes
An OFTEC technician cleans the burner, combustion chamber and baffles, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the electrodes and pump pressure, and tests the combustion with an analyser. On Gower properties with long supply runs, they should also inspect the pipe from the tank, the fire valve and the flue.
Ask for an OFTEC service record (CD/11) and keep it with your home insurance documents.
Before the technician arrives
Make sure there's enough oil in the tank to run the boiler during testing. Clear a path to the tank and the boiler, and find the last service record. If the boiler has been making new noises, smelling of fumes or producing soot, mention it when you book.
Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with the boiler if you don't already have one. In rented homes in Wales, landlords must provide one where they supplied an oil-fired appliance.
Your tank
Check the tank for cracks, bulging, rust or leaks, and keep vegetation clear of it. A spill from a domestic tank can pollute soil and watercourses, and clean-up costs can be very high. Ask the technician to inspect the tank and pipework at the same visit.
In salty coastal air, steel tanks and fittings corrode faster. Plastic bunded tanks are common replacements.
Moving away from oil
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, plus an extra £1,500 for oil and LPG homes with no mains gas until March 2027. Nest may fund the work in full for eligible low-income households. Our heating oil prices guide sets out what oil costs against other fuels.

Questions people in Swansea ask
When should Gower homes book an oil service?
Late spring or summer, before technicians get busy in autumn. A boiler serviced before winter is less likely to fail in a cold snap.
Can Gower College engineers service oil boilers?
Engineers need OFTEC registration to service oil boilers. Gower College Swansea trains and assesses technicians for OFTEC, but you book the service with a registered technician, not the college.
How often should an oil tank be replaced?
There's no fixed age. Replace it if the technician finds cracks, bulges, corrosion or a failing base, and ask for a bunded tank if yours is single-skinned.
