Oil boiler servicing in Doncaster

Annual oil boiler servicing by OFTEC registered technicians covering Doncaster's villages and rural fringe.

Doncaster is a big borough with a rural edge. The 2021 Census counted about 1,190 households heating with oil alone, another 1,330 on tank or bottled gas, and 870 on solid fuel. Most are in villages and on farms beyond the reach of the gas main.

That is a small share of the borough, under 1% for oil, but enough to keep local OFTEC technicians busy every autumn.

How homes are heated
82.3% of Doncaster households heat with mains gas only and just 3.8% with electricity only. 1.0% use tank or bottled gas, 0.9% oil (about 1,190 homes) and 0.7% solid fuel such as coal (about 870 homes). Source
Local grant
Doncaster Council accepted £1.6 million of Warm Homes: Local Grant funding in March 2025 for energy efficiency work on around 110 privately owned homes. It was the council's sixth successful retrofit bid, bringing its total to £12.2 million over four years. Source

The annual service

An OFTEC registered technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, tests combustion with a flue gas analyser and checks the controls, fire valve and oil line. Keep the service record for your insurer and warranty.

Tank checks

Look over your tank regularly. Watch for cracks, bulges, rust, damp patches below it or an oil smell. Plastic tanks usually last about 20 years. A leak can contaminate land and drains, and in low-lying areas near rivers and dykes, that matters even more.

Ordering alongside neighbours in your village can cut the delivery price; our heating oil prices guide covers timing and recent trends.

Signs it needs attention sooner

Call a technician between services if there is smoke from the flue, an oil smell indoors, soot around the terminal or the boiler keeps locking out. These point to poor combustion, which wastes oil and can produce carbon monoxide.

An audible CO alarm near any oil boiler in a Doncaster village home is cheap protection.

Switching to a heat pump

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump, plus a £1,500 top-up until March 2027 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas. Doncaster Council's Warm Homes: Local Grant can also help eligible lower-income households with insulation and low-carbon heating.

Questions people in Doncaster ask

When should I book?

Late summer or early autumn, before technicians get busy with breakdowns.

Can a Gas Safe engineer do it?

Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Ask before booking.

What about bottled gas or LPG?

LPG boilers need a Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG, not an OFTEC technician. Tell us which fuel you use when you ask for a service.
