Oil boiler servicing around Hull

Oil heating is almost absent from Hull itself but common in the East Riding villages around it. OFTEC registered technicians service both.

The 2021 Census found just 40 households in the City of Hull heating with oil alone. Step over the boundary and it's a different story: 8,770 East Riding households, 5.8%, use oil only. If you live in a village west or north of Hull, oil may well be what heats your home.

With so many oil customers nearby, OFTEC technicians are easier to find around Hull than the city's own figures suggest.

Hull at a glance

How homes are heated
80.1% of Hull households heat with mains gas only and 7.1% with electricity only. Just 40 homes in the city use oil only. In the neighbouring East Riding of Yorkshire, 8,770 households (5.8%) heat with oil only. Source

The annual service

An OFTEC registered technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, analyses the flue gases and tests the fire valve and oil line. Oil soots up faster than gas, so don't skip a year.

Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil, so make sure the technician is OFTEC registered.

Tank checks on flat, wet ground

The land around Hull is flat and drains slowly, and a leaking tank can contaminate ditches and drains quickly. Ask for a tank inspection at every service: check for cracks, bulges or rust, a sound base and a bund. The heating oil prices guide on this site helps you time deliveries.

Switching to a heat pump

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump, with £1,500 more for homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas, until March 2027. Village bungalows and detached houses with gardens are often a good fit. East Riding of Yorkshire Council also has Warm Homes: Local Grant funding for eligible households.

When to book

Technicians across the East Riding get busy from October. Booking in late summer means any repairs are done before you need the heating, and you can order oil once you know the boiler is running well. Keep the service record for your insurer and for when you sell.
