Oil boiler service in Exeter
Oil heating is uncommon in Exeter, but those homes still need a yearly service from an OFTEC registered technician.
Only 135 Exeter households, 0.3% of the city, heated with oil alone in 2021. They were spread thinly: Topsham had the most with 19, followed by St Loyes with 18 and Duryard and St James with 17. These are typically homes that were never connected to the gas network.
With so few in the city, check the OFTEC technician you book covers your postcode, and book in spring or summer rather than at the first frost.

What the service covers
An OFTEC registered technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the electrodes and pump pressure, and tests the combustion. They should also check the flue, the fire valve and the supply pipe from the tank.
Ask for an OFTEC service record (CD/11) and keep it for insurance and when you sell.
Before the visit
Leave at least a few inches of oil in the tank so the burner can be run under test, and clear a route to both the boiler and the tank. Dig out the previous service sheet too. Mention any smells, soot or lockouts when you book, so the technician brings the right parts.
Tank care
Inspect your tank for cracks, bulges, rust or leaks, and keep plants clear. A spill can pollute soil and water and is costly to clean up. Ask the technician to check the tank and pipework at the same visit. In Topsham and near the Exe, keep a particular eye on anything close to drains or watercourses.
Switching
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, plus an extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas, until March 2027. Devon's Warm Homes: Local Grant may fund the work for eligible households. Our heating oil prices guide helps compare running costs.

Questions people in Exeter ask
Can a Gas Safe engineer service an oil boiler in Exeter?
Only if they are also OFTEC registered. Gas Safe covers gas work only.
Does an Exeter oil boiler need a CO alarm next to it?
Yes. Fit one in the room with the boiler. In rented homes in England, landlords must provide one in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance.
When should an Exeter oil boiler be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in late spring or summer. Technicians are busiest in autumn when everyone remembers their heating at once.
