Oil boiler service in Plymouth

Oil heating is rare in Plymouth, but the homes that use it still need a yearly service from an OFTEC registered technician.

Oil barely features in Plymouth. The 2021 Census counted 108 households, 0.1% of the city, heating with oil alone. The biggest cluster was just 20 homes in Plymstock Radford ward, with a dozen or so in Plympton Erle and a scattering elsewhere.

With so few oil boilers in the city, check that the technician you book covers your postcode and holds current OFTEC registration, and book in late spring or summer rather than waiting for the first cold spell.

What the service covers

An OFTEC registered technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the electrodes and pump pressure, and tests the combustion with an analyser. Expect them to look over the flue route, test the fire valve and check the supply line back to the tank.

Ask for an OFTEC service record (CD/11) and keep it with your insurance documents.

The tank

Check your tank for cracks, bulges, rust and leaks, and keep plants and debris clear of it. A leak can pollute soil and water and is expensive to clean up. The technician can inspect the tank, base and pipework at the same visit.

Before the technician arrives

Check there's enough oil in the tank for the boiler to run during testing, clear the way to the boiler and the tank, and find the last service sheet. Mention any smells, soot or lockouts when you book.

Thinking of switching?

Oil homes have the strongest grant offer. For Plymouth homes, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards a heat pump, and homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas get a further £1,500 until March 2027. Plymouth's Warm Homes: Local Grant may fund the work in full for eligible households. To weigh oil against a heat pump on running costs, start with our heating oil prices guide.

Questions people in Plymouth ask

Can a Gas Safe engineer service my oil boiler in Plymouth?

Only if they also hold OFTEC registration. Gas Safe registration covers gas appliances only.

Should a Plymouth home with an oil boiler have a carbon monoxide alarm?

Yes, fit one in the room with the boiler. In rented homes in England, landlords must provide a CO alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker.
