Oil boiler servicing in Liverpool

Oil-fired heating is almost unheard of in Liverpool, but the few homes using it still need an OFTEC registered technician each year.

Only 111 Liverpool households relied on oil alone for heating in the 2021 Census. The gas grid covers virtually the whole city, so an oil boiler here is usually a one-off: an old lodge or outbuilding, or a property on the city edge that was never connected to gas.

Liverpool has about nine times as many homes on bottled or tank gas (986) as on oil. If you heat with LPG, you need a Gas Safe engineer with LPG competence rather than an OFTEC technician.

The service

An OFTEC technician cleans the burner, replaces the nozzle and filter, tests combustion and checks the tank and supply line.

Leaving oil behind

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 for an air source heat pump, plus £1,500 until March 2027 for homes on oil or LPG with no gas connection.

Why yearly servicing matters on oil

Oil burners produce more soot than gas, and a dirty nozzle or blocked filter wastes fuel and can cause the boiler to lock out. A yearly service keeps combustion clean and lets the technician spot a leaking fitting or a corroded tank before it causes damage.

The technician should give you a written record with the combustion readings. Keep it with your boiler paperwork.

Tank checks

Check the tank's base, bund and any visible pipework for signs of leaks. A spill from a domestic tank can contaminate soil and drains, and cleaning it up costs far more than a new tank. Ask the technician to check the fire valve and the oil line on the same visit.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Liverpool work across areas including Anfield, Walton, Wavertree, Allerton, Childwall, West Derby, Aigburth, Woolton, Garston and Toxteth.

Questions people in Liverpool ask

Who services oil boilers in Liverpool?

We pass your request to OFTEC technicians who cover your postcode, who may be based outside the city.

Is it worth connecting to mains gas instead?

If gas runs nearby, ask Cadent for a connection quote and compare it with the heat pump grant. Then compare it with a heat pump, where the grant for an off-gas home currently totals £9,000.

How far ahead should I book?

Book in late summer. Few OFTEC technicians work inside the city, and they get busy once the first cold weather arrives.
