Oil boiler servicing in Manchester
Oil heating is rare in Manchester, but the homes that use it still need a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.
Just 193 Manchester households heated with oil alone in the 2021 Census, around 0.1% of the city. The gas network reaches nearly every street, so oil is mostly found in isolated older properties and a few commercial sites converted to homes.
That scarcity means fewer technicians in the city itself. Expect a firm from the edge of Greater Manchester or Cheshire to take the job.
Manchester at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 67.0% of Manchester households heat with mains gas only and 18.3% (39,199 homes) with electricity only. 1.1% (2,349 homes) are on a district or communal heat network and just 193 homes use oil only. Source
What the technician does
A full oil service includes cleaning the burner and combustion chamber, fitting a new nozzle and filters, a flue gas test and a check of the supply pipe and fire valve. Only an OFTEC registered technician should sign it off.
Checking the tank and bund
Ask for the tank and its base to be checked as well. Plastic tanks crack with age, and a leak into the ground is expensive to clean up. When you reorder fuel, our heating oil prices guide shows how prices have moved.
Switching away from oil
In Manchester, an air source heat pump can get £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Until March 2027, homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas connection get an extra £1,500.
If gas runs past your property, connecting may be another option. Ask for quotes on both before your next major oil repair.
LPG and other off-gas fuels
A little over 1,000 Manchester homes used tank or bottled gas only in 2021, more than five times the number on oil. LPG boilers are serviced by Gas Safe engineers with LPG competence, not OFTEC technicians, so mention the fuel when you book.

Questions people in Manchester ask
Can a Gas Safe engineer service my oil boiler?
Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Gas registration on its own doesn't cover oil.
Should I book my oil service before winter?
Late summer. Burner faults tend to show up on the first cold morning, and the few technicians covering Manchester get busy from October.
I've found an old oil tank at a property I bought. What should I do?
Get a specialist to drain and remove it, and keep the waste transfer paperwork. A part-full tank left in place can leak years later.
