Oil boiler servicing in Stoke-on-Trent
Oil heating is uncommon in the city, but homes that use it need a yearly service from an OFTEC registered technician.
The 2021 Census counted 99 Stoke-on-Trent households heating with oil only. Another 479 used bottled or tank gas and 236 used solid fuel. Together that's well under 1% of homes, but those households can find it harder to get a technician than gas users do.
Technicians who service oil boilers around the city tend to be rural firms. Book before autumn, when their diaries fill with breakdowns.
Stoke-on-Trent at a glance
- How homes are heated

What the service involves
An OFTEC registered technician strips and cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the fire valve and oil line, and sets the burner using a flue gas analyser. OFTEC registration also lets them sign off new oil installations without a separate Building Regulations application.
Holding Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil work. Check the technician's OFTEC card before they start.
The tank
Have the tank and its base looked at on the same visit. A cracked plastic tank or a rusting steel one can leak into the ground, and clean-up is costly. For help timing your next delivery, see our heating oil prices guide.
Warning signs
Oil smells indoors, black smoke from the flue or repeated lockouts all mean it's time to call a technician, whatever the service date. Don't keep pressing reset, as unburnt oil can build up in the chamber.
Solid fuel and LPG homes
Stoke-on-Trent has more solid fuel homes than oil ones: 236 against 99 in 2021. Solid fuel appliances and chimneys need a HETAS registered installer and regular sweeping. LPG boilers, used in 479 homes, are gas appliances and need a Gas Safe engineer with LPG competence.
Switching
Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas get £9,000 towards an air source heat pump until March 2027. If a big repair is due, get a heat pump survey from an MCS installer first.
