Smart thermostat installation in London
Hive, Nest, tado and smart radiator valves, wired in and set up. In London, the kind of heating in your home decides which ones will work.
Smart thermostats are built around gas boilers, and seven in ten London homes have one. But 12.6% of London households heat with electricity only, mostly flats with storage or panel heaters, and the big-name thermostats aren't designed for those.

Check what you're controlling
Most smart thermostats run combi and system boilers through a simple on/off switch. With a modern boiler, look for OpenTherm support, which lets the thermostat turn the flow temperature down instead of cycling the boiler on and off.
Storage heaters need their own controller, usually from the heater maker. On a heat network, ask the managing agent which controls the heat interface unit accepts before you buy anything.
Renting and smart heating
Three in ten London households rent privately, and many want controls they can take with them. Get the landlord's agreement before changing a wired thermostat. A wireless model with a plug-in or wired receiver can be swapped back to the original when you leave.
Zoning with smart radiator valves
In a terrace where the front room is used in the evening and the back bedroom only at night, smart radiator valves give each room its own schedule. That's where tall, narrow houses save the most.
Valves on every radiator add up, so start with the rooms you heat least and the ones that overheat. Check the existing radiator valves are thermostatic-ready, since some very old valve bodies won't take a smart head without an adapter.
London homes and what they need
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Three-storey terraces heat unevenly, with the top floor running warm. Smart valves on each radiator even it out without new pipework.
Converted flats and mansion blocks
Over half of London homes are flats, and many have the thermostat in a cold hallway, so the living room overheats. A wireless thermostat can sit in the room you use most.
Outer-borough 1930s semis
Homes with a hot water cylinder can schedule hot water from the same app. Check the model supports hot water control before you buy.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover London work across areas including Islington, Hackney, Camden, Brixton, Wimbledon, Ealing, Croydon, Walthamstow, Greenwich and Richmond.
Questions people in London ask
Do I need a gas engineer to fit one?
Not for most swaps. A heating engineer wires the receiver to the boiler's control terminals. If the job means taking off the boiler's sealed casing, it needs a Gas Safe engineer.
Will a smart thermostat cut my bills?
Only if it changes how your heating runs. Schedules that match when you're home, lower flow temperatures and room-by-room control do the saving; the app itself doesn't.
