Smart thermostat installation in Reading

Hive, Google Nest, tado and others fitted and set up by heating installers covering your RG postcode.

Most Reading homes have a gas boiler, and any of them can take a smart thermostat. They are most useful where the house is empty for long, irregular stretches, which describes plenty of Reading households with commuting or hybrid working patterns.

About one in six homes heats with electricity only, and the options there are different.

Will it work with your boiler?

Combis are the easiest. System and regular boilers with a cylinder need a thermostat that also schedules hot water. OpenTherm-compatible models can turn the boiler down rather than just on and off, which keeps a condensing boiler efficient.

Older boilers with a separate programmer may need a little rewiring. The installer should remove or clearly disconnect the old controls.

Homes on electric heating

Storage heaters can't be controlled by a standard boiler thermostat. Modern panel heaters and newer storage heaters often have their own app control. If you're replacing them anyway, look at a heat pump, which the local Warm Homes grant can fund for eligible households.

Renters

Nearly a third of Reading homes are privately let, so many people need permission before changing controls. Ask in writing; most landlords agree if you keep the old thermostat to refit when you leave. Smart radiator valves screw on in place of standard heads and are easy to reverse.

Room by room

Smart radiator valves let each room heat to its own schedule. In a terrace with a cold front room and a warm kitchen, or a semi with a home office, that saves more than a single thermostat can.

Reading homes and what they need

Victorian brick terraces in the town's older streets

Put the thermostat in the living room rather than the hallway by the front door, where draughts fool it.

Interwar and post-war semis in the suburbs

Hot water scheduling matters if you still have a cylinder.

Estates and apartments built from the 1970s onwards

In a small flat one thermostat is enough. Check Wi-Fi reaches the boiler cupboard.

Questions people in Reading ask

Does it need a Gas Safe engineer?

No gas work is involved, but a heating engineer usually fits it, since it's wired to the boiler.

Will a smart thermostat lower my bills?

It can, if it stops the boiler heating an empty house. The saving depends on how often the home is empty and how well you set the schedule.
