New boiler installation in Cambridge

Compare fixed quotes from Gas Safe registered installers covering Cambridge, with scale protection specified from the start.

In a city where tap water averages over 300 mg/l of calcium carbonate, a new boiler without proper scale protection can lose efficiency in a few years. Get that part of the quote right before you look at price.

Scale protection is not optional

Building Regulations guidance requires scale protection for new combi boilers where water hardness exceeds 200 mg/l. Cambridge water is well over that. Expect an electrolytic or polyphosphate scale reducer on the cold main feeding the boiler, and a magnetic filter on the heating return.

Some boiler makers set their own conditions for hard water areas in the warranty. Ask the installer to confirm the chosen boiler's warranty is valid with the protection they are fitting.

Combi, system or regular

A combi suits a flat or a small terrace with one bathroom. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder suits homes with more than one bathroom and keeps space for a heat pump later.

If you are keeping a cylinder, consider a new one at the same time. Old cylinders in very hard water areas are often heavily scaled inside.

Flats

Over a third of Cambridge households live in flats. Flue routes are often the limiting factor, and leaseholders may need the freeholder's consent for a new flue terminal. Check your lease before you get quotes.

Cambridge homes and what they need

Victorian gault brick and red brick terraces

Most of these terraces take a combi, sited in the kitchen or roof space. If you are planning a loft conversion, place the new boiler elsewhere to avoid moving it later.

Interwar and post-war semis in the northern and eastern suburbs

These often have room for a cylinder. Switching to a system boiler keeps mains-pressure hot water and future-proofs for a heat pump.

Recent developments on the city fringes

Some newer homes are on a heat network with no individual boiler. Check before booking a survey.

Questions people in Cambridge ask

Is there a grant for a new boiler?

Not in general. Grants focus on heat pumps and insulation. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump.

How much does a new boiler cost?

Our new boiler cost guide gives national prices. Scale protection and a filter should be included, not added as extras.

How long does fitting take?

A combi swap in the same position is usually a day. Changing from a cylinder system to a combi, or moving the boiler to a new room, often takes two or three days.
