Scale protection is a must

With water around 370 mg/l as calcium carbonate in central Hull, fit a scale reducer on the cold mains feed to any new combi, and ask what type it is. Electrolytic and polyphosphate units tend to cope better with very hard water than basic magnetic ones. Check the boiler manufacturer's warranty terms for hard water areas too, because some set specific requirements.

A magnetic filter on the heating return and fresh inhibitor are still needed, as with any installation.

Combis in terraces

A two-up two-down or a three-bed terrace with one bathroom is the classic combi home. Check the mains flow rate first, because a combi can only deliver as much hot water as the incoming main allows. A good installer measures it at the kitchen tap.

Flue routes from back kitchens into narrow yards can be tight. A plume kit may be needed to direct the vapour away from neighbours' windows.

If your home flooded then or is at risk now, ask for the boiler to be wall-hung well above floor level and keep electrics and controls high. It costs little at installation and can save the boiler.

Do I need a water softener with a new boiler?

Not necessarily. A good scale reducer protects the boiler. A softener protects the whole house, including showers and taps, but costs more and needs salt. Keep an unsoftened tap for drinking if you fit one.
