Boiler repair in Glasgow
Boiler down? Tell us what is happening and we pass the job to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your Glasgow address.
If you rent from the council or a housing association, as about a third of Glasgow households do, phone your landlord's repairs line rather than booking an engineer yourself. They have their own contractors and will pay for the repair.
If you own your home or rent privately, the steps below help you work out what is wrong and get it fixed faster.
Glasgow at a glance
- Tenure
- 34.9% of Glasgow households rent from the council or a housing association, against 22.5% across Scotland. 16.4% rent privately and 46.7% own their home. Source
- Water hardness
- Very soft. Scottish Water's 2025 results for the Milngavie M3 zone, which serves central Glasgow, show a mean conductivity of just 55 µS/cm, the lowest of Scotland's four largest cities. The Drinking Water Quality Regulator says most Scottish water is soft. Source
Quick checks
Look at the pressure gauge: most boilers want 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Our boiler pressure guide explains how to refill it. Make sure the gas meter has credit, the boiler has power and the thermostat is turned up. Try one reset. If it locks out again, call for a repair and note the fault code.
Sludge, pumps and valves
Glasgow's very soft water means scale is rarely the culprit. More common are pumps, diverter valves and heat exchangers blocked with corrosion sludge in systems that have never been cleaned or fitted with a filter. If several radiators are cold at the bottom, mention it, as the engineer may recommend a system clean alongside the repair.
Private tenants
Report the fault to your landlord or letting agent in writing. Heating and hot water fall under the Repairing Standard, and if your landlord does not act you can apply to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Housing and Property Chamber).
Glasgow homes and what they need
Sandstone tenement flats
Some older tenement boilers vent into a shared chimney or flue. If the engineer finds a problem there, the fix may involve the other owners or the factor.
Four-in-a-block and cottage flats
Many still have combis installed when the homes were modernised. If yours is over 15 years old and the repair is a big one, ask for a replacement price too.
Suburban semis and bungalows
A cold upstairs with a warm downstairs often points to a stuck zone valve or airlock rather than the boiler itself.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Glasgow work across areas including Partick, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Hyndland, Govan, Maryhill, Pollokshields, Cathcart, Bearsden and Rutherglen.
Questions people in Glasgow ask
Is it safe to keep using a boiler that makes banging noises?
Banging or kettling usually means overheating in the heat exchanger, often from sludge. Turn it off and get it checked, especially if it keeps happening.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Get out, do not use switches or flames, and call 0800 111 999 from outside.
My boiler works but the radiators stay cold. Is that a repair?
It may be the pump, a stuck valve or sludge rather than the boiler. Describe it when you book, so the engineer comes ready to check the whole system.
