Gas leak or CO alarm

Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can safely, open windows and get out. Do not use switches. Repairs follow once the emergency service says it is safe.

After a flood or a water cut

In July 2007 floodwater shut the Mythe treatment works and around 140,000 households in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester lost mains water, some until 2 August. Combis need mains water to make hot water, so a supply cut stops them as well.

When water returns, air in the pipes can make the boiler lock out. Run a cold tap until the flow is steady before resetting. If the boiler was under floodwater, do not switch it on at all. A Gas Safe engineer must inspect it first, as water can damage the gas valve and electronics.

Quick checks

Check the pressure gauge. Below 1 bar on a sealed system is a common cause of lockout, and our boiler pressure guide explains how to top it up.

Check any timer and thermostat batteries. In a freeze, look at the condensate pipe outside; a frozen pipe stops the boiler, and warm water over it usually clears the blockage.

Older systems

Semis from the 1930s to the 1960s often run an older pump and motorised valve. If the boiler fires but radiators stay cold, or you have heating but no hot water, those parts are the likely culprits.
