Boiler repair in Swindon
Describe the fault and we send it to Gas Safe registered engineers who take repair work across the Swindon area.
With nearly four in five Swindon homes relying on mains gas alone, a boiler breakdown usually means no heating and no hot water until it is fixed. Many faults are minor and can be cleared in one visit, especially if you give the engineer the boiler model and fault code when you book.
Swindon at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 78.6% of Swindon households heat with mains gas only and 9.4% with electricity only. 545 homes (0.6%) use oil alone and 541 (0.6%) tank or bottled gas. Source
- Who owns and rents
- 63.7% of Swindon households owned their home in 2021, 19.3% rented privately and 15.6% rented from the council or a housing association. Source
- Water hardness
- Hard. Swindon's water comes from Thames Water, which classes the whole of its supply area as hard (over 200 mg/l calcium carbonate). Source
- Council homes
- Swindon Borough Council is running a £48m energy programme on its own homes from 2024 to 2029. A £10m heating contract covers around 1,800 homes, with 412 new A-rated condensing boilers fitted by March 2026. Source
Smell gas? Act first
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. Turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe to reach, open doors and windows, and leave the house. Do not switch lights or appliances on or off. The emergency service makes the supply safe, then you can book a repair.
Three checks that save a call-out
Check the boiler pressure gauge. If it reads below 1 bar, the boiler may have locked out. Topping up is covered step by step in our boiler pressure guide.
Look at the condensate pipe outside if it is freezing. Thawing it with warm water and resetting the boiler often restarts it.
Make sure the timer, thermostat and any smart control are actually calling for heat. A flat battery in a wireless thermostat is a surprisingly common fault on newer estates.
Common faults in Swindon
Thames Water classes its supply as hard, so scaled heat exchangers and failing hot water sensors turn up often on combis that have no scale reducer. Signs are hot water that surges hot and cold or a boiler that bangs when you run a tap.
On newer condensing boilers, blocked condensate traps and failed fans are also routine fixes.
If you rent
Private tenants should report the fault to the landlord or agent in writing. Council tenants report it to Swindon Borough Council's repairs line. The council is part way through replacing boilers in around 1,800 of its homes, so if yours keeps failing, ask whether it is on the list.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Swindon work across areas including Old Town, Wroughton, Highworth, Stratton St Margaret, Haydon Wick, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wichelstowe, Penhill, Freshbrook and Covingham.
Questions people in Swindon ask
Repair or replace?
If the boiler is under ten years old, a repair is usually the better value. For an older boiler with a failed heat exchanger, get a replacement quote too. For price comparisons, see our new boiler cost guide.
How can I confirm the engineer is on the Gas Safe Register?
Ask for their Gas Safe ID card and check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website. The back of the card lists the work they are qualified to do.
