Boiler repair in Reading
Describe what the boiler is doing and we pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover Reading.
Seven in ten Reading households rely on mains gas alone for heating and hot water. When the boiler fails, the repair has to be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and it's worth checking their registration card before they start.
A few simple checks can sometimes get you going again without a call-out.
Reading at a glance
- Water hardness
- Thames Water, which supplies Reading, classes all of its water as hard (200 to 300 mg/l of calcium carbonate) or very hard (over 300 mg/l). Source

- Landlord gas checks
- Landlords must have every gas appliance and flue checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every 12 months. Source
Start with these
Check the boiler has power, the thermostat is calling for heat and the timer is on. Then read the pressure gauge: if it's below about 1 bar, our boiler pressure guide shows how to top it up.
If the boiler shows a fault code, look it up in the manual. One reset is fine; if the same code returns, stop and book an engineer.
Very hard water and combi faults
Thames Water's supply is hard or very hard. In Reading combis that leads to scaled plate heat exchangers, sticking diverter valves and flow sensors clogged with debris. The fix might be a descale, a new part or, on an old boiler, replacement.
Ask the engineer for the repair price and, if the boiler is past ten years, a rough replacement figure. Our new boiler cost guide helps you weigh them up.
If you smell gas
Call 0800 111 999 for the National Gas Emergency Service. Open windows, don't use switches or naked flames, and leave the property if the smell is strong.
Renters
With almost a third of Reading homes privately let, many breakdowns are the landlord's to fix. Report the fault in writing to the landlord or agent, note the date and any fault code, and keep a copy.
Reading homes and what they need
Victorian brick terraces in the town's older streets
Older terraces often have pipework under suspended floors. A slow leak there causes pressure loss you can't see.
Interwar and post-war semis in the suburbs
If only the hot water or only the heating has failed on a system with a cylinder, a zone valve or pump may be the cause rather than the boiler.
Estates and apartments built from the 1970s onwards
In flats, the condensate pipe may run internally to the waste. Blockages there cause lockouts as well as freezing.
