Boiler Repair Oxford: Gas Safe Engineers

About three in four Oxford homes heat with mains gas alone, so when a boiler stops, it usually takes both the heating and the hot water with it. Most faults are fixed in one visit once the engineer knows the make, model and fault code.

Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm

Stop and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely, open the windows and get everyone outside. Do not use light switches or anything that could spark. Book the repair only once the emergency team has made everything safe.

Before you book

Look at the pressure gauge. Below 1 bar on a sealed system, the boiler may lock out to protect itself, and topping up via the filling loop often brings it back. Our boiler pressure guide shows how.

In a frost, check the white plastic condensate pipe where it leaves the house. If it has frozen, pouring warm (not boiling) water over the outside section and pressing reset can clear the fault.

Note any code on the display and take a photo of the data badge, usually under the front panel. Engineers can then bring the likely parts.

Faults linked to hard water

Thames Water describes all its supply as hard. Over years, scale narrows the plate heat exchanger and coats the hot water sensor on combis. The symptoms are hot water that runs hot and cold, kettling noises, or a boiler that fires for the heating but struggles with taps. Descaling or replacing the heat exchanger is a common repair in hard water areas.

Renting in Oxford

If you rent, report the breakdown to your landlord or agent in writing and keep a copy. Repairs to heating and hot water are the landlord's job. In a licensed shared house, the council expects the landlord to keep gas appliances safe, and you can contact Oxford City Council's private housing team if repairs drag on.

Long pipe runs to back extensions and loft conversions are common. If only the top floor radiators are cold, trapped air or a sticking valve is more likely than a boiler fault.

Flats and converted houses

A boiler in a flat may have a flue that runs through a ceiling void. If the engineer cannot inspect it, they may leave the boiler switched off until access is arranged, so find out where the inspection hatches are.

Is it worth repairing a boiler over 12 years old?
