Boiler repair and gas engineers in Huddersfield

Tell us the fault code or what the boiler is doing, and we pass it to Gas Safe registered engineers who work across Huddersfield and the valleys.

Four out of five Kirklees homes heat with mains gas alone, more than in Leeds or Bradford. When the boiler stops, most households have nothing else to fall back on. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer can work on the gas, burner or flue.

Huddersfield at a glance

Water hardness
Soft. Yorkshire Water's Huddersfield supply zone (including Birkby, Bradley, Golcar, Lindley's Salendine Nook and Mirfield) averaged 20 mg/l calcium in 2024. The Holmfirth and Emley zone averaged 28.8 mg/l, rated moderately soft. Source
Home ownership and renting
35.0% of Kirklees households owned their home outright in 2021. 19.1% rented privately and 11.1% rented from the council. Source

First, check for danger

If you smell gas, leave the property and call 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service, from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, open windows, get out and call the same number.

Cold-weather faults in the valleys

Homes higher up in places like Marsden, Holmfirth and Meltham see harder frosts than the town centre. The condensate pipe, which carries water from the boiler to a drain, can freeze on long outside runs. The boiler then shows a fault and shuts down.

Pour warm water along the pipe from the outside, reset the boiler, and ask an engineer to insulate or reroute it before next winter.

Wind can also make boilers lock out on exposed sites. If it keeps happening on blustery nights, an engineer can look at the flue position and terminal.

Pressure and sludge

Pressure below 1 bar stops many boilers. Top it up using our boiler pressure guide. If you lose pressure every week, there's a leak or a faulty expansion vessel.

Soft water means Huddersfield engineers seldom replace scaled-up heat exchangers, but sludge-blocked ones are common. A repair should come with advice on cleaning the system so it doesn't happen again.

Tenants and older owners

If you rent, your landlord must arrange and pay for the repair. Council tenants should report it to Kirklees Council's repairs line. If you own your home and live alone, tell the engineer if you're elderly or have a health condition, since many prioritise households with no heat and vulnerable people.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Huddersfield work across areas including Lindley, Marsh, Edgerton, Almondbury, Lockwood, Birkby, Fartown, Newsome, Holmfirth and Marsden.

Questions people in Huddersfield ask

Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old boiler?

Sometimes. If the part is cheap and the boiler is otherwise sound, repair. If the heat exchanger has gone or parts are obsolete, compare with our new boiler cost guide.

My landlord won't fix the boiler. What can I do?

Put the request in writing and keep a copy. If nothing happens within a reasonable time, contact Kirklees Council's private sector housing team.

Can the engineer bring the part on the first visit?

If you send the boiler make, model and fault code when you book, they can often bring the likely part and fix it in one trip.
