Boiler repair and gas engineers in Leeds

Tell us what the boiler is doing and we pass the details to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your Leeds postcode.

With over 260,000 Leeds households relying on mains gas alone, a broken boiler means no heating and usually no hot water either. Any work on the gas side must be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their ID card and check the back lists boilers.

Varies across the district. Yorkshire Water rates most Leeds supply zones slightly hard (Headingley averaged 49.8 mg/l calcium in 2024, Horsforth 55.9), the zone serving Garforth, Rothwell and Kippax hard (107 mg/l), and Pudsey moderately soft (36.2 mg/l). Source

Landlord gas checks
Landlords must have every gas appliance and flue checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every 12 months and keep the record for 2 years. Source

Smell gas? Do this first

Leave the house, don't touch light switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It's free and runs day and night. Once the supply is made safe, a Gas Safe engineer can find and fix the cause.

Faults Leeds engineers see every winter

A frozen condensate pipe is the classic one. Many Leeds terraces have the pipe running outside down a north-facing yard wall, and when it freezes the boiler shows a fault and stops. Pouring warm, not boiling, water over the pipe and then resetting the boiler often gets you going until an engineer can reroute or insulate it.

Low pressure is next. If the gauge sits under 1 bar, top it up using the filling loop. If it keeps dropping, there's a leak somewhere or a failing expansion vessel, and that needs a visit. Our boiler pressure guide walks you through the top-up.

In the east of the district, where the water is rated hard, scale on a combi's hot water heat exchanger shows up as hot water that runs lukewarm or surges hot and cold. A descale or a new plate exchanger usually fixes it.

Repair or replace?

If the boiler is more than 12 to 15 years old and the part is expensive or hard to get, ask the engineer for a rough repair price and a replacement price side by side. Our new boiler cost guide gives national figures to compare.

Renting in Leeds

About one in five Leeds households rents privately and another 15% rent from the council. If you rent, the repair is your landlord's job, not yours. Report it in writing, and keep a copy. Council tenants report repairs to Leeds City Council's housing service.

Questions people in Leeds ask

Can a plumber fix my boiler?

Only if they are also Gas Safe registered for boilers. Water-side jobs like a leaking radiator valve don't need Gas Safe, but anything that involves the gas supply, burner or flue does.

My boiler works but the radiators upstairs are cold. Is that a repair?

Often it's air or sludge rather than the boiler. Try bleeding the radiators first; our guide on how to bleed a radiator shows how. If that doesn't work, a heating engineer can look at the pump and pipework.
