Frozen condensate pipes
A condensing boiler drains water through a plastic pipe, often to an outside drain. In a cold snap that pipe can freeze, the boiler backs up and locks out, sometimes with a gurgling noise. Pour warm water along the outside section, then press reset.
If it happens every winter, ask the engineer to reroute the pipe internally or upsize and insulate it. Garages and outside walls on estate houses are the usual trouble spots.
Faults from hard water
Scale on the plate heat exchanger gives you hot water that won't stay hot. Scale on a primary heat exchanger can make the boiler overheat and cut out. A seized diverter valve, often helped by deposits, can leave you with heating but no hot water, or the reverse.
Ask the engineer to say whether scale caused the fault. If so, a scale reducer on the cold feed should go in with the repair.
