Boiler service in Leicester
Book the yearly check before the cold sets in. We pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your Leicester postcode.
More than half of Leicester households rent. In the 2021 Census, 29.4% rented privately and another 23.2% rented from the council or a housing association. That makes the boiler service a two-sided job in this city: owners book it for themselves, and landlords book a legal safety check that many people confuse with a service.
The water adds a second reason to stay on schedule. Severn Trent rates the city's supply as hard, so scale builds slowly inside combis and shows up as weak hot water long before the boiler stops.

Landlords: a safety check is the minimum
HSE rules say a Gas Safe engineer must check every gas appliance and flue in a let property every 12 months. Tenants get a copy of the record. The check confirms the boiler is safe on the day; it does not strip and clean it.
In a city with this many rented terraces, ask for the gas safety record and a full service on one visit. It costs less than two call-outs, and a cleaned boiler is less likely to fail mid-tenancy, when you have to fix it quickly anyway.
Inside the service
The engineer removes the casing, checks the burner, cleans or inspects the heat exchanger and condensate trap, and runs a flue gas analysis. Gas pressure and the safety devices are tested, and the flue is checked from end to end.
With Leicester's water reading around 207 to 225 mg/l of calcium carbonate in Severn Trent's recent results, ask the engineer to look at hot water flow rate on a combi. A drop compared with last year is often the first sign of scale on the plate heat exchanger.
What your house type means for the visit
Red-brick Victorian terraces
Boilers in terraces often sit in the back kitchen or the rear extension, with the flue running into a narrow side passage. Make sure the engineer can reach the terminal outside, and clear the cupboard so the case can come off.
Interwar and postwar semis
Many semis around Knighton, Evington and Wigston still run a regular boiler with a cylinder upstairs. Ask for the cylinder thermostat and zone valves to be checked on the same visit.
Estates built from the 1990s onwards
A boiler fitted when the house was new may be on its second or third replacement by now. Keep the logbook in a drawer near the boiler, because the warranty on a newer model usually depends on a yearly service being recorded.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Leicester work across areas including Clarendon Park, Stoneygate, Knighton, Belgrave, Evington, Aylestone, Braunstone, Oadby, Wigston and Birstall.
Questions people in Leicester ask
I rent in Leicester. Should I book the service myself?
No. Your landlord or letting agent arranges and pays for the annual gas safety check. Let the engineer in, and if the date passes with no visit, remind the landlord in writing and keep a copy.
Is once a year enough with hard water?
Yes, for most homes. The service is the moment to spot scale, so don't skip a year. What else happens on the day is covered in our boiler service guide.
