Boiler servicing in Portsmouth

A Gas Safe registered engineer checks the boiler is safe, cleans it and spots scale damage early. We pass your request to engineers who cover your PO postcode.

Portsmouth Water publishes hardness figures for every supply zone, and in 2025 none of them dropped below 267 mg/l of calcium carbonate. Some zones topped 300 mg/l, which the company classes as very hard.

Water that hard leaves scale inside any boiler that heats it directly, so the yearly service is when an engineer can catch a struggling heat exchanger before it fails.

Scale: what the engineer looks for

On a combi, ask the engineer to run the hot tap and check the temperature rise and flow. A slow, uneven rise points to scale on the plate heat exchanger. On a system or regular boiler, the cylinder coil and immersion heater scale up too.

If there's no scale reducer on the cold feed to your combi, ask whether one suits it. Several manufacturers expect one in hard water areas as a warranty condition.

Landlords and tenants

Nearly three in ten Portsmouth households rent privately, many of them in Southsea and Fratton terraces let as shared houses. HSE requires the landlord to have a Gas Safe engineer check every gas appliance and flue each year and give tenants the record.

In a house in multiple occupation, that includes any gas hob in a shared kitchen as well as the boiler. Booking the service and safety check together saves a second visit.

When to book

Late spring and summer are quieter for engineers than October. A service before the heating season also means any parts can be ordered while you don't need the heating.

Portsmouth homes and what they need

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Terraces in Southsea and Fratton often have the boiler in a rear kitchen or bathroom with the flue in the alley between houses. Make sure the engineer can reach the back of the house to see the flue terminal.

Converted houses and purpose-built flats

In a council or housing association block, the landlord's contractor usually services the boiler. Private leaseholders arrange their own.

1930s semis on the mainland side

Semis in Cosham, Drayton and Farlington often keep a hot water cylinder. Ask the engineer to check the cylinder thermostat and the immersion heater for scale.
