Boiler service in Wolverhampton

Having your Wolverhampton boiler serviced every year keeps it safe, efficient and covered by its warranty. We pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your Wolverhampton postcode.

Wolverhampton's water isn't one thing. The city is split between two water companies, and even within Severn Trent's area the hardness changes sharply. Its reports give about 151 mg/l of calcium carbonate in the Wolverhampton City zone but 274 mg/l in Penn, which moves from moderately hard into the hard band.

That matters most if you have a combi. In the harder parts of the city, scale builds faster on the plate heat exchanger, and the yearly service is when an engineer can catch it.

Wolverhampton at a glance

Water hardness
Moderately hard to hard, and it varies a lot by street. Severn Trent's postcode reports for August 2025 to July 2026 give about 151 mg/l of calcium carbonate in its Wolverhampton City zone, about 211 mg/l in its Bilston zone, 269 mg/l in Essington and 274 mg/l in Penn. Source
Two water companies
City of Wolverhampton Council lists both Severn Trent Water and South Staffs Water as suppliers in the city. Some postcodes, including parts of WV2 and WV14, aren't on Severn Trent's checker, so your bill tells you which company to ask. Source
Who rents
25.2% of Wolverhampton households rent from a social landlord, 18.8% directly from the council. 19.0% rent privately. Source

Find out how hard your water is

Check your water bill to see whether Severn Trent or South Staffs Water supplies you, then use that company's postcode checker. City of Wolverhampton Council lists both as local suppliers.

If your result is above 200 mg/l, ask the engineer to look for signs of scale and whether your combi has a scale reducer on the cold feed. Below that, scale is slower but not absent.

The service itself

Expect the engineer to inspect and clean the burner, heat exchanger and condensate trap, check gas pressure and safety devices, and measure flue gases with an analyser. They should check the flue terminal outside is clear and well sited.

Have the logbook or manufacturer's app updated. A missing service record is a common reason warranty claims fail.

Council, housing association and private tenants

One in four Wolverhampton households rents from a social landlord, most of them from the council. If that's you, your landlord books the annual gas safety check, and you need to let the engineer in.

Private landlords must arrange a check by a Gas Safe engineer every 12 months, give tenants the record and keep copies for two years. It's a safety check, not a full service, so ask for both if you want the boiler maintained.

Preparing for the visit

Interwar and post-war semis across the estates

Many of these semis still have a regular boiler with a cylinder in the airing cupboard. Ask the engineer to check the pump, zone valves and cylinder thermostat while they're there.

Victorian red brick terraces near the centre

The boiler is often in a back kitchen or a cupboard under the stairs. Clear access and make sure the flue outlet is visible from the yard.

Low-rise and tower block flats

Some blocks are all-electric and some are on communal heating. If your flat has its own gas boiler, confirm the flue route can be inspected.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Wolverhampton work across areas including Tettenhall, Penn, Wednesfield, Bilston, Whitmore Reans, Finchfield, Compton, Bushbury, Fallings Park and Codsall.

Questions people in Wolverhampton ask

Should I service more often in a hard water area?

Once a year is still the norm. In Penn or Essington, where water tests above 260 mg/l, it's more important not to skip a year. Our boiler service guide explains what's checked.
