Heat pump installation in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

MCS certified installers survey, design and fit air source heat pumps, and claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.

Detached houses and bungalows with gardens are the easiest homes to fit a heat pump to, and BCP has a lot of them. More than a third of households live in a detached house, so space for the outdoor unit is rarely the problem it is in terraced cities.

Will it cope with frost?

Heat pumps work below freezing, but their efficiency drops as the outdoor temperature falls. Hurn averages around 56 frosty nights a year, more than the coast, so a good MCS design uses a local design temperature and sizes the unit for cold spells.

Defrost cycles are normal on frosty mornings. You may see steam from the outdoor unit for a few minutes.

Bungalows: a strong match

A bungalow has every room on one floor, usually with a loft above that can be insulated cheaply and a garden on several sides for the outdoor unit. Radiators are easy to reach for upsizing, and pipework in the loft can be replaced without lifting floors.

If the house has a cylinder already, much of the hot water side is in place.

Planning

On a house, an air source heat pump is usually permitted development within the Planning Portal's limits. Bournemouth's town centre and parts of Poole and Christchurch have conservation areas, where a street-facing unit generally needs permission. Flats need the freeholder's consent and often permission.

Grants

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump. Homes on oil or LPG, of which BCP has several hundred, get an extra £1,500 until March 2027.

Lower-income households may also qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant through the Dorset-led consortium that includes BCP. Healthy Homes Dorset can advise.

Bournemouth homes and what they need

Interwar and post-war semis and detached houses

Gardens and cylinder space make these ideal. Many have cavity walls; filling them reduces the size of heat pump needed.

Flats in converted villas and purpose-built blocks

Upper-floor flats are difficult. Ground-floor flats with a garden have better options.

Bungalows across the suburbs and Christchurch

Single-storey homes have a large roof and floor area relative to their volume, so loft and floor insulation make a real difference before the heat pump goes in.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Bournemouth work across areas including Boscombe, Southbourne, Westbourne, Winton, Charminster, Kinson, Moordown, Pokesdown, Christchurch and Poole.
