Heat pump installation in Swansea
Your request goes to MCS certified heat pump installers covering Swansea and Gower, who carry out the survey, design the system and apply for the grant.
Swansea has a clear group of homes where a heat pump makes the most sense: those off the gas network. On the Gower ward, 43.8% of households heated with oil alone in 2021, and another 15.5% with bottled or tank gas. Clydach, Pennard and Pen-clawdd also have hundreds of oil-heated homes.
For those households, an air source heat pump avoids oil deliveries and tank maintenance, and comes with extra grant money until March 2027.
Swansea at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 80.3% of Swansea households heat with mains gas only and 5.6% with electricity only. 1,959 homes (1.9%) rely on oil alone and 1,066 (1.0%) on tank or bottled gas. Source
- Off-gas Gower
- In the Gower electoral ward, 43.8% of households (540) heated with oil alone in 2021 and 15.5% with tank or bottled gas. Clydach (308 homes), Pennard (155) and Pen-clawdd (149) also have sizeable numbers on oil. Source
- Housing mix
- 34.5% of Swansea households lived in semi-detached houses in 2021, 25.4% in terraces and 24.0% in detached houses. Flats, maisonettes and apartments made up 15.9%. Source
- Energy ratings
- Only 38.0% of Swansea homes with an EPC lodged up to March 2022 were rated C or above, below Cardiff's 47.5%. For terraced houses the figure was 25.9%, and for homes built before 1930 it was 13.2%. Source
- Nest scheme
- Nest pays for heat pumps, insulation or solar panels for Welsh owner-occupiers and private tenants who get a means-tested benefit or have a low household income, where the home's EPC score is 54 or less (68 or less with a qualifying health condition). Source
- Median energy score
- About 53% of homes with an EPC in Swansea are rated band D or below (median score 68, band D), against 53% across Wales. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Grants
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump in Wales. If your home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection, you can get an extra £1,500 until March 2027. Your MCS installer applies for you.
Lower-income owners and private tenants may get a heat pump fully funded through Nest. See our heating grants page for Swansea.
Fabric first in a low-rated city
Swansea has the lower EPC ratings of the two big south Wales cities: 38.0% of homes with a certificate reached C or above, against 47.5% in Cardiff. Terraces fare worst. A heat pump in a poorly insulated house needs to be larger and may need more radiator changes, so fix the loft, cavity walls and draughts first where you can.
Good questions for the survey
Ask for a room-by-room heat loss calculation, a design flow temperature, and the expected seasonal efficiency. Check where the outdoor unit and cylinder will go. On coastal sites, ask whether the unit has a coating or protection suited to salty air, and how it will be fixed in an exposed position.
Swansea homes and what they need
Hillside Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Narrow rear yards and steep plots make siting tricky. Solid walls lose heat, so internal or external insulation may be needed before a heat pump is a good fit.
Interwar and post-war semis
Often the best candidates in the city. Cavity walls can be filled, gardens give room for the unit, and the airing cupboard can take a cylinder.
Waterfront and city-centre flats
Individual units are hard to fit in most blocks. If your flat has electric heating, ask about air-to-air heat pumps, which can get a £2,500 grant.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Swansea work across areas including Sketty, Uplands, Mumbles, Killay, Morriston, Townhill, Brynmill, Gorseinon, Pontarddulais and Clydach.
Questions people in Swansea ask
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Swansea?
Many installations are permitted development, but the Welsh rules have conditions and Gower is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ask your installer to check with Swansea Council before you commit.
What will it cost?
That depends on size and radiator work. Our heat pump cost guide shows typical figures, and the grant comes off the total.
