Central heating engineers in Bradford
From one cold radiator to a full new system in a Victorian house. Tell us the job and we pass it to heating engineers who cover your area.
Bradford's heating systems are often old and large. Tall stone terraces and big Victorian houses can have radiators on four floors, from the cellar to the attic, and pipework that has been patched over many decades. Engineers here spend a lot of time on circulation and dirt rather than the boiler itself.
Bradford at a glance
- Water hardness
- Soft. Yorkshire Water rates Bradford's supply moderately soft: the Bradford City North zone (Manningham, Eccleshill, Undercliffe) averaged 30.2 mg/l calcium in 2024, and the Baildon and Bingley zone 21.8 mg/l. Source
- How homes are heated
- 78.4% of Bradford households heat with mains gas only, 7.2% with electricity only and 0.3% (702 homes) with oil only. 8.7% have two or more types of central heating. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 63% of homes with an EPC in Bradford are rated band D or below (median score 65, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Sludge in a soft-water city
Soft water means little limescale, but it doesn't stop steel radiators corroding from the inside. The result is black magnetite sludge that collects at the bottom of radiators and in the boiler. A radiator that's warm at the top and cold at the bottom is the giveaway.
A power flush or chemical clean, followed by a magnetic filter and inhibitor, usually sorts it. In very old systems some radiators are too far gone and are cheaper to replace.
Balancing a tall house
In a three or four-storey house, radiators nearest the boiler grab the heat and the top floor stays cool. Balancing the lockshield valves spreads the flow. If that's not enough, the pump may be undersized for the height.
Houses with more than one heat source
Nearly 9% of Bradford homes have two or more types of central heating. That might be a gas boiler plus an electric heater in an extension, or a boiler plus a stove. A heating engineer can help you decide which to keep and how to control them together.
Heating work in Bradford homes
Stone-built terraces and back-to-backs
Pipes buried in solid stone walls are hard to reach. If one leaks, surface-mounted replacement pipework is often quicker and cheaper than chasing out stone.
Interwar and post-war semis
Many were converted from back boilers with the original pipe layout kept. If the downstairs heats fast and upstairs lags, the pipe sizes may be the reason.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Bradford work across areas including Heaton, Manningham, Shipley, Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon, Idle, Eccleshill, Thornton and Wibsey.
Questions people in Bradford ask
Can I bleed radiators myself?
Yes. Our guide on how to bleed a radiator shows how. Check the boiler pressure afterwards, because letting air out lowers it.
Do heating engineers need to be Gas Safe?
Only for work on the gas boiler or gas supply. Radiators, pipes and valves can be done by any competent heating engineer.
Is it worth replacing old radiators?
If they're leaking, badly corroded or too small to heat the room, yes. New radiators are also more efficient, and if you might get a heat pump later, ask for sizes that suit lower flow temperatures.
