Central heating engineers in Doncaster
Radiators, pipework, cylinders and controls, passed to registered heating engineers who cover Doncaster.
Doncaster's mining past still shows in how some homes are heated. The 2021 Census counted about 870 households heating with solid fuel such as coal, and more homes in the former pit villages once had a back boiler behind the fire. Replacing those old systems with modern central heating is a big part of a heating engineer's work here.
For most homes, the job is upgrading an ageing gas system: radiators, pipes, valves and controls.
Doncaster at a glance
- Water hardness
- Hard. Yorkshire Water's 2024 results rate the Doncaster supply zone as hard (109.3 mg/l calcium), as well as the Armthorpe zone covering Bessacarr and Wheatley (103 mg/l) and the Carcroft zone covering Bentley, Sprotbrough and Conisbrough (107.6 mg/l). Source
- How homes are heated
- 82.3% of Doncaster households heat with mains gas only and just 3.8% with electricity only. 1.0% use tank or bottled gas, 0.9% oil (about 1,190 homes) and 0.7% solid fuel such as coal (about 870 homes). Source
- Age of homes
- 29.3% of Doncaster's homes were built between 1945 and 1972 and 20.6% between 1919 and 1939. 13.3% date from before 1919. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 51% of homes with an EPC in Doncaster are rated band D or below (median score 68, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Replacing back boilers and solid fuel
A back boiler sits behind a gas fire or a coal fire and heats the radiators and hot water. Many are now decades old and parts are scarce. Replacing one usually means a new boiler on an outside wall, new pipework to it, a new flue and capping the old chimney flue properly.
If your home burns coal, a heat pump with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is worth comparing with a gas connection.
Ask for the old cylinder and header tanks to be removed at the same time if you are moving to a combi. It frees the airing cupboard and loft and removes a freeze risk.
Hot water cylinders and hard water
Yorkshire Water rates Doncaster's supply as hard. Cylinders and immersion heaters scale up over time, so hot water takes longer to heat and the immersion may fail. A heating engineer can descale or replace the immersion element, or replace the cylinder if the coil is badly scaled.
Better controls
Many Doncaster semis built between 1945 and 1972 still have a single room thermostat and no thermostatic radiator valves. Adding TRVs, a programmable thermostat and a cylinder thermostat is cheap and improves comfort straight away.
Doncaster homes and what they need
Interwar and postwar semis
Extensions and loft conversions often have too few radiators. A heat loss check shows whether a room needs a larger one.
Red-brick terraces in town and the former pit villages
Pipes under suspended floors lose heat. Insulating them and the floor void helps a lot.
Bungalows
Long single-storey layouts mean long pipe runs. Balancing the system makes the far rooms warm up properly.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Doncaster work across areas including Bessacarr, Balby, Armthorpe, Bentley, Wheatley, Hatfield, Thorne, Mexborough, Conisbrough and Tickhill.
Questions people in Doncaster ask
Why are my radiators cold at the top?
That is air in the system. Follow our how to bleed a radiator guide, then check the boiler pressure.
Can I keep my gas fire when the back boiler goes?
Often yes, if it is a separate appliance that has been checked and its flue is sound. Some fires were built as one unit with the back boiler, and both come out together.
