Heating engineers in Hull
Radiators, pumps, cylinders and full system upgrades. Tell us the job and we pass it to heating engineers who cover your part of Hull.
In a city with water as hard as Hull's, heating engineers spend as much time on the hot water side as on radiators. Cylinders, immersion elements, showers and the mains pipework into the boiler all collect scale. The sealed heating circuit is less affected, but it brings its own problems with age.
Hull at a glance
- Water hardness
- Very hard. Yorkshire Water's Hull Central West zone (Newland, Sculcoates, Stepney, Dairycoates) averaged 148.4 mg/l calcium in 2024, about 370 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Kirk Ella and Hessle averaged 128.4 mg/l and Cottingham 145.3 mg/l (both very hard); Bransholme and Sutton 107 mg/l (hard). Source
- How homes are heated
- 80.1% of Hull households heat with mains gas only and 7.1% with electricity only. Just 40 homes in the city use oil only. In the neighbouring East Riding of Yorkshire, 8,770 households (5.8%) heat with oil only. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 48% of homes with an EPC in Hull are rated band D or below (median score 69, band C), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Hot water problems
An immersion heater that takes longer and longer to heat the cylinder, or trips the electrics, is often coated in scale. Replacing the element is a routine job. On an unvented cylinder, the safety valves and expansion vessel should be checked every year, and scale can make valves stick.
A water softener protects everything on the mains side, from the boiler to the shower head. You must keep an unsoftened tap for drinking, as Yorkshire Water advises. A heating engineer can tell you whether a softener or a simpler scale reducer suits your home.
Radiators and circulation
Radiators cold at the bottom have sludge. Cold at the top, they need bleeding; the guide on how to bleed a radiator on this site shows how. If one room is always cold, the system may need balancing or the pump may be weak.
A power flush or chemical clean, plus a magnetic filter, is the standard fix for a sludged-up system.
Electric and communal heating
About 7% of Hull homes heat with electricity only, mostly flats. A smaller number, about 370, are on a communal or district heat network, where faults go to the network operator or landlord.
Heating work in Hull homes
Victorian and Edwardian terraces off the main roads
Pipework under suspended timber floors is easy to reach by lifting a board. Lag pipes in the void to stop them freezing.
Interwar and post-war semis and estate houses
Many estate houses had heating fitted in the 1970s with microbore pipes, which block easily. Replacing key runs can cure stubborn cold spots.
Bungalows in the villages around the city
Pipes in the loft space need good insulation. A frozen loft pipe is a common winter call-out.
