Heating engineers in Leicester

Radiators, pipework, controls and full system upgrades, passed to registered heating engineers who cover your Leicester postcode.

One in nine Leicester households, 11.0% in the 2021 Census, heat their home with electricity only. That is mostly flats and some converted houses with storage heaters or panel heaters. The rest of the city is overwhelmingly on gas, with radiators fed by a boiler.

The work a heating engineer does differs a lot between those two groups, so tell us which you have when you ask for a quote.

Leicester at a glance

Water hardness
Hard. Severn Trent's results for August 2025 to July 2026 rate both city supply zones as hard: about 207 mg/l as calcium carbonate in the Leicester City zone and about 225 mg/l in the Victoria Park zone. Source
Age of homes
26% of homes in Leicester were built before 1919, and 20% before 1900, according to the Valuation Office Agency's March 2024 count. Source
How homes are heated
74.0% of Leicester households heat with mains gas only and 11.0% with electricity only. 1.9% are on a communal or district heat network and 1.9% have no central heating. Only 49 households use oil alone. Source
Energy ratings
About 57% of homes with an EPC in Leicester are rated band D or below (median score 67, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source

Wet systems in older houses

In a house built before 1919, the radiators and pipes may have been added in stages since the 1960s. Mixed metals, microbore pipe and undersized radiators are common. A heating engineer can balance the system, add thermostatic valves and swap the worst radiators for larger ones.

If radiators stay cold at the bottom, sludge is the likely cause. A chemical clean plus a magnetic filter is often enough; a full power flush suits badly blocked systems.

Off storage heaters

Moving from storage heaters to a gas boiler means new pipework, a flue and a gas supply, which is a big job in a flat. Modern high-heat-retention storage heaters or a heat pump may make more sense. Ask for both options to be priced.

Hard water and heating circuits

Severn Trent rates Leicester's water as hard. A sealed heating circuit holds the same water for years, so scale is less of a problem there than on the hot taps. Inhibitor matters more: ask the engineer to test it and top it up after any drain-down.

Leicester homes and what they need

Red-brick Victorian terraces

Pipes often run under suspended timber floors. Lifting boards is easier than chasing walls, and it is the moment to lag pipes in a cold void.

Interwar and postwar semis

One-pipe systems from the 1950s and 60s still turn up. They heat unevenly and are hard to balance; replacing them with a two-pipe layout is a worthwhile job.

Estates built from the 1990s onwards

Zoning upstairs and downstairs separately with a second thermostat is a cheap upgrade on these layouts.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Leicester work across areas including Clarendon Park, Stoneygate, Knighton, Belgrave, Evington, Aylestone, Braunstone, Oadby, Wigston and Birstall.

Questions people in Leicester ask

My radiator is cold at the top. What's wrong?

That is usually trapped air. Let the air out with a radiator key, as shown in our how to bleed a radiator guide. If the pressure drops afterwards, top it back up.

Does swapping a radiator in my Leicester terrace need Gas Safe registration?

Not to swap a radiator on a wet system. Anything that touches the boiler, the gas supply or the flue does need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
