Heating grants in Huddersfield
The grants Huddersfield households can apply for, and how to check what's available at your address.
Kirklees isn't named on the government's list of councils given money for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, unlike Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale and Wakefield. That doesn't necessarily mean you can't get help, but it does mean you should check rather than assume. The national heat pump grant is open to everyone.
Huddersfield at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 80.8% of Kirklees households heat with mains gas only and 5.2% with electricity only. 715 homes (0.4%) use oil only, 816 (0.5%) tank or bottled gas, and 437 renewable energy only. Source
- Home ownership and renting
- 35.0% of Kirklees households owned their home outright in 2021. 19.1% rented privately and 11.1% rented from the council. Source
- Warm Homes: Local Grant
- Kirklees is not named on the government's July 2026 list of councils given Warm Homes: Local Grant funding. GOV.UK says you're eligible only if your local council has funding available, and its online checker confirms this when you apply. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 58% of homes with an EPC in Kirklees (which includes Huddersfield) are rated band D or below (median score 67, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
This is the main grant available to every Huddersfield homeowner. It pays £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, with no income limit. Your MCS certified installer applies on your behalf.
If your home uses oil or LPG and has no gas main, you get an extra £1,500 until March 2027. With over 1,500 Kirklees homes on oil or bottled gas, many of them in the hills, that top-up matters here. Our Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide has the full rules.
Checking the Warm Homes: Local Grant
The local grant is for privately owned homes rated EPC D to G, usually where household income is £36,000 or less. GOV.UK says you're eligible only if your council has funding available. Use the online checker, or call the helpline on 0800 098 7950, and it will tell you.
ECO4 and GBIS
The Great British Insulation Scheme closed in March 2026, and ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026. If anyone offers you free work under these schemes now, ask who's funding it and check before you agree.
Grants for Huddersfield homes
Stone-built terraces and cottages
Solid stone walls often mean a low EPC. Insulation should come before a heat pump, so ask for a whole-house assessment.
Interwar and postwar semis
Usually suited to cavity and loft insulation plus a heat pump. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can be used whatever your income.
Mill conversions and town-centre flats
Flats in converted mills may already rate well. Changes to shared heating need the building owner's agreement.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Huddersfield work across areas including Lindley, Marsh, Edgerton, Almondbury, Lockwood, Birkby, Fartown, Newsome, Holmfirth and Marsden.
Questions people in Huddersfield ask
Is someone offering a free boiler legitimate?
Be wary. Genuine grant schemes don't ask for upfront fees. Find the official contact details yourself and check.
I rent from Kirklees Council. Can I get a grant?
Council homes aren't covered by the Warm Homes: Local Grant. Upgrades to council housing are planned and funded by the council itself, so ask your housing officer.
Do I need an EPC?
Yes for the local grant. You can look up your certificate on GOV.UK. Heat pump installers will also need one for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
