Who can get the local grant
The home must be privately owned, either lived in by the owner or rented from a private landlord, and rated EPC D to G. You also need household income of £36,000 or less, a means-tested benefit such as Universal Credit, or a postcode in one of the most deprived areas.
Sheffield prioritises households with children aged 16 or under, people aged 65 or over, and anyone with a disability or long-term health condition. Owner-occupiers with savings under £23,250 are also prioritised.
Applying
Apply online through E.ON's Warm Homes: Local Grant page. E.ON also offers live chat and a phone line on 0333 202 4820.
What the grant can pay for
The council lists loft, wall and floor insulation, air or ground source heat pumps, smart heating controls, low-energy lighting, solar panels and energy-efficient doors and windows. Heating upgrades are typically heat pumps, and boilers powered by fossil fuels are not being offered.
An assessor visits first and recommends measures for your home. You don't choose them from a list.
National schemes
Sheffield homeowners can get £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, with no check on income. ECO4, funded by energy suppliers, runs until 31 December 2026 according to Ofgem.
Sheffield homes and what they need
Victorian terraces on the hillsides
Solid walls often bring EPCs down to D or E. Internal wall insulation may be offered; ask about moisture risk.
Interwar and postwar semis
Cavity wall and loft insulation are the usual first steps.
Large stone villas in the western suburbs
Big homes with high bills may be EPC E or below, but higher incomes in these areas often rule out the local grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme still applies.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Sheffield work across areas including Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Sharrow, Heeley, Dore and Stocksbridge.
Questions people in Sheffield ask
I'm a council tenant. Can I apply?
No. Council homes are improved under separate programmes. Raise heating or damp issues with the council.
Do I need to pay anything?
The council describes the scheme as fully funded for eligible households. Be wary of anyone asking for a fee to check eligibility.
What if I don't have an EPC?
Search the GOV.UK register first. If there isn't a valid certificate, E.ON can tell you whether one will be arranged as part of the assessment.
