Warmer Homes Grant
The council says it offers fully funded upgrades such as insulation, low-carbon heating and solar panels. It widened eligibility in 2025 so that gas-heated homes can qualify if the household gets a means-tested benefit and the home is rated EPC D to G. Landlords and private tenants can apply as well as owners.
Check eligibility through the Warmer Homes website linked from the council's page.
Before you apply
Find your EPC on the GOV.UK register, gather proof of benefits or income, and if you're a tenant or shared owner, talk to your landlord. A surveyor will usually visit before any work is agreed.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The national heat pump grant is £7,500 for an air or ground source system, open to owners and landlords alike with no means test. Off-gas homes on oil or LPG get an extra £1,500 until March 2027. About 1,900 Milton Keynes homes use oil or LPG alone, mostly in villages.
ECO4
ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026, but funding is limited. Don't rely on it if another scheme fits.
Avoiding scams
No real scheme in Milton Keynes asks you to pay a fee to find out if you qualify. If someone cold-calls about a free boiler and asks for money or bank details, hang up and contact the council directly. Report suspicious calls to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice.
Milton Keynes homes and what they need
Modern estate homes
Most newer homes rate C or above, so they're unlikely to qualify for the local grant.
Detached family houses from the 1970s onwards
Older detached homes may rate D, especially with original windows or thin loft insulation. Insulation and a heat pump could both be options.
Victorian railway terraces in the older towns
Solid walls often mean a low EPC rating, so these homes are more likely to qualify.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Milton Keynes work across areas including Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Olney, Woburn Sands, Broughton, Shenley Church End, Great Linford and Westcroft.
Questions people in Milton Keynes ask
Can shared owners apply?
Ask the scheme directly. You may need your housing association's consent for the work.
I live in Olney. Am I covered?
Yes. Olney and the northern villages are in the Milton Keynes City Council area, so the same council scheme applies.
