Warm Homes: Local Grant in West Northamptonshire

You can apply if you own your home or rent privately, the home is rated EPC D to G, and you either have household income of £36,000 or less, receive certain means-tested benefits, or live in a priority postcode. The council publishes the postcode list on its website.

Measures include insulation, draught-proofing, smart heating controls and low-carbon heating. The delivery partner, Sureserve Energy Services, checks eligibility and manages the work.

Off-grid villages

The council says its local grant covers both on-gas-grid and off-grid properties. For an oil-heated cottage near Daventry or Towcester rated EPC E or F, that can mean insulation first and a heat pump after, with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme covering part of the heat pump cost.

Ask the assessor to explain which measures each scheme is paying for, so nothing is counted twice.

For heat pumps

In Northampton, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump and does not test your income. A Northamptonshire village home on oil or LPG, with no mains gas, qualifies for a further £1,500 until March 2027. Your MCS installer applies.

Energy supplier scheme

ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026, according to Ofgem, and helps low-income households with insulation and heating. Its sister scheme for single insulation measures, the Great British Insulation Scheme, stopped taking new installations at the end of March 2026.

Northampton homes and what they need

Planned estates and newer developments

Homes from the 1970s and 80s often have thin cavity fill and loft insulation. Topping them up can lift the EPC.

Interwar and postwar semis

Cavity wall insulation is cheap and often grant-funded.

Red-brick Victorian terraces

Solid walls push EPCs down. Ask about internal wall insulation under the local grant.

Questions people in Northampton ask

How do I contact the delivery partner?

The council lists Sureserve's email as [email protected]. You can also check eligibility through the GOV.UK Warm Homes: Local Grant service.

Will a grant pay for a new gas boiler?

No. The local grant funds insulation and low-carbon heating, not gas boilers.

Do I need an EPC first?

Yes. Look up your certificate on GOV.UK. If none exists, the grant assessor may arrange one as part of the survey, but check before paying for one yourself.
