Damp and mould removal in Swansea
Find out whether it's condensation, rain getting in or rising damp, then fix the cause before the mould is treated.
Swansea faces the Atlantic weather head on. Wind-driven rain off the bay soaks exposed gable walls, while terraces built into steep hillsides can have rear rooms partly below ground. Both lead to damp that no amount of mould spray will fix.

Three causes, three fixes
Condensation shows as mould in corners, behind furniture and around windows, worst in winter. It needs better heating and ventilation.
Rain penetration shows as damp patches after storms, often on the side facing the weather. It needs gutters, pointing, render or flashing repairs.
Damp from the ground or a retaining wall shows at low level or on walls cut into the slope. It needs a specialist survey, and sometimes drainage or tanking.
If you rent in Swansea
About 37% of Swansea households rent, split almost evenly between private landlords and social landlords. Under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act, damp and mould are hazards that can make a home unfit to live in.
Report the problem in writing, with photos. Private renters can contact Swansea Council if the landlord doesn't act. Council and housing association tenants should use their landlord's repairs and complaints process first.
Choosing a surveyor
Look for someone who checks the outside of the building, measures humidity and wall temperatures, and explains the cause before selling a treatment. Be wary of a quote for chemical damp-proofing based only on a meter reading.
Swansea homes and what they need
Hillside Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Rear walls cut into the slope and outriggers with flat roofs are the usual problem spots. Check drainage behind the house and the condition of the flat roof first.
Interwar and post-war semis
Mould in bedrooms often comes from condensation on cold external walls. Check that cavity insulation is present and hasn't failed, and that the bathroom fan works.
Waterfront and city-centre flats
Newer flats are airtight. Drying clothes indoors without ventilation is a common cause of mould here, so use the extractor or a dehumidifier.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Swansea work across areas including Sketty, Uplands, Mumbles, Killay, Morriston, Townhill, Brynmill, Gorseinon, Pontarddulais and Clydach.
Questions people in Swansea ask
How do I clean mould safely in my Swansea home?
For small areas, wear gloves and a mask and use a mould remover, as explained in our guide to removing mould from walls. For large areas, or if anyone has a lung condition, get a specialist.
Can Nest help with damp?
Nest funds insulation and heating improvements for eligible households, which can reduce condensation. It won't pay for damp repairs such as roof or gutter work.
Does a dehumidifier help in Swansea's damp climate?
It helps with condensation, especially if you dry washing indoors. It won't stop rain getting through a wall. Our window condensation guide has other practical steps.
