Oil boiler service in Middlesbrough
Oil heating is very rare in Middlesbrough. Where a home does have it, your request goes to OFTEC registered technicians working in the area.
Only 54 households in Middlesbrough borough heated with oil alone at the 2021 Census, about 0.1%. Almost the whole borough is on mains gas. Most oil boilers nearby are in villages and farms outside the borough boundary, towards the Cleveland Hills and the North York Moors.
If yours is one of the few inside Middlesbrough, you'll likely be served by technicians who also cover those rural areas.

What the service covers
An OFTEC technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, tests combustion and checks the flue. Doing this every year keeps fuel use down and reduces the risk of a breakdown.
Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil. Ask for OFTEC registration.
Check the tank
Ask the technician to inspect the tank, its base and the supply pipe. Look out for rust, bulging, cracks or a strong smell of oil near the tank. A leak can be expensive to clean up.
Signs of trouble between services
Black smoke from the flue, a smell of oil or fumes indoors, soot around the boiler or the burner locking out repeatedly all need a technician straight away. Switch the boiler off if you smell fumes.
A sudden fall in the tank level with no change in use may mean a leak in the supply line. Check the pipe route and call a technician.
Switching away from oil
If your home has no mains gas, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds £1,500 to the £7,500 grant for an air or ground source heat pump, until March 2027. If there's a gas main nearby, connecting may also be an option. Our heating oil prices guide helps compare.
