Oil boiler service in Sunderland

Oil-fired heating is uncommon in Sunderland. If you have it, we pass your request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover your postcode.

The 2021 Census counted 144 Sunderland households heating with oil alone, about 0.1%. More used solid fuel only (240) or bottled gas (405). Oil here tends to be found in isolated farm properties and older houses that were never reached by the gas main.

Because so few homes use it, fewer local engineers handle oil. Book well ahead of winter.

OFTEC, not Gas Safe

Oil boilers are serviced by technicians registered with OFTEC. A Gas Safe card doesn't cover oil work. Ask to see the OFTEC registration before the visit.

On the visit

The technician cleans the burner and heat exchanger, changes the nozzle and filters, checks combustion with an analyser and looks at the flue. Oil burners soot up faster than gas, so a yearly service matters for efficiency.

Ask for a look at the tank and pipework too. Rust, cracks, a weak base or a leaking fitting should be fixed before they cause a spill.

Thinking of switching?

Until March 2027, a home heated by oil or LPG with no gas connection gets £1,500 extra on top of the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for an air or ground source heat pump. To weigh up running costs, look at our heating oil prices guide.

Tank rules worth knowing

A new or replacement tank must meet Building Regulations, including distance from the house and boundaries and, in many cases, a bund to catch leaks. An OFTEC registered installer can self-certify the work so you don't need a separate building control application.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Sunderland work across areas including Roker, Seaburn, Fulwell, Ashbrooke, Millfield, Hendon, Southwick, Doxford Park, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring.

Questions people in Sunderland ask

Is once a year enough for an oil boiler?

Yes for most homes. Book it before the heating season starts, when OFTEC technicians are less busy.

My boiler stopped after a delivery. Why?

A delivery can stir sediment from the bottom of the tank into the filter. A technician can clear it and check the tank for water.

Could I connect to mains gas?

Most of Sunderland is on the gas grid. Ask Northern Gas Networks if your property can be connected.
