Oil boiler service in Newcastle
Oil boilers are rare inside Newcastle. If you have one, we pass your request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover your postcode.
The 2021 Census counted just 131 Newcastle households heating with oil alone, about 0.1% of homes. The city is almost entirely on the gas grid, so oil boilers here are mostly found in isolated farmhouses and older detached homes on the rural north-west edge.
Over the boundary in Northumberland, oil is more common, and many technicians who serve those villages also cover Newcastle postcodes.
Newcastle at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 74.8% of Newcastle households heat with mains gas only and 10.1% with electricity only. 2.3% (2,880 homes) are on a district or communal heat network. Oil-only heating covers 131 households, about 0.1%. Source
Why service an oil boiler yearly
Oil burners build up soot and carbon faster than gas burners. A yearly service cleans the combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and filter, and checks the flue gas. Skipping it raises fuel use and the risk of a breakdown.
The technician should be OFTEC registered. Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil.
Signs it needs attention sooner
Black smoke from the flue, a smell of oil indoors, the burner locking out or a sudden jump in how fast the tank empties all mean you should call a technician now rather than wait for the yearly visit.
If the boiler stops after a delivery, sludge stirred up from the bottom of the tank may have blocked the filter. That's a common call-out in older installations.
Oil homes in Newcastle tend to be older detached and farm properties, with the tank well away from the house. Ask the technician to check the supply line along its full length, including any fire valve.
The tank
Ask for a tank check on the same visit. The technician looks for cracks, rust, a sound base and whether the tank is bunded. If you're thinking of replacing it, OFTEC registered installers can self-certify the work under Building Regulations.

Moving off oil
Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can get an extra £1,500 on top of the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for an air or ground source heat pump, until March 2027.

Questions people in Newcastle ask
Will my usual Gas Safe engineer do it?
Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Many don't, so ask before booking.
Is there mains gas I could switch to instead?
Most of Newcastle is on the gas grid. If your home isn't, ask Northern Gas Networks whether a connection is possible and what it would cost.
