New boiler installation in Dundee
Compare fixed quotes from Gas Safe registered installers who cover Dundee, and make sure the new boiler is sized for your home rather than the last one.
Oversized boilers are common, and they cost more to buy and short-cycle in use. A two-bedroom Dundee flat rarely needs the biggest combi on the market. Ask each installer how they worked out the size.
Most homes in the city run on mains gas, so a straight swap is the norm. But if your home is one of the 13.6% heated by electricity, adding a gas boiler is a bigger job, and a heat pump may be worth comparing.

Help with the cost
With 38% of Dundee households in fuel poverty, many people buying a boiler are on a tight budget. Warmer Homes Scotland can fund heating upgrades for eligible households on lower incomes, and Home Energy Scotland can check whether you qualify. Like-for-like gas boilers are not covered by the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan, which is aimed at clean heating and insulation.
Combi or system
Flats and smaller houses with one bathroom usually suit a combi. Houses with two bathrooms, or where you may fit a heat pump later, are often better with a system boiler and cylinder.
Soft water helps a combi keep its hot water flow over the years, since the plate heat exchanger is less likely to scale up.
On the day
Expect the old system to be flushed, a filter fitted and inhibitor added. The installer must be Gas Safe registered and should register the warranty. Check there is a working carbon monoxide detector in the room before they leave.
Getting quotes
Ask at least three installers to visit. Each quote should name the boiler model, its output, the warranty length and what is included, such as the flush, filter, controls and removal of the old boiler. Hold them up against the UK-wide figures in our new boiler cost guide.
A longer warranty is usually conditional on a yearly service, so budget for that from the first year.
Dundee homes and what they need
Victorian stone tenements
Moving a boiler in a tenement often means a new flue through a stone wall. Keeping it in the same spot is cheaper and quicker.
Four-in-a-block and postwar flats
Straightforward combi swaps are typical. Ask whether the gas pipe is big enough for a newer, more powerful combi.
Suburban semis and bungalows
A bungalow with the boiler in the loft can move it down to a utility room during replacement, making future servicing easier.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Dundee work across areas including Broughty Ferry, West End, Lochee, Stobswell, Hilltown, Menzieshill, Downfield, Fintry, Douglas and Monifieth.
Questions people in Dundee ask
How long does a boiler swap take?
A like-for-like combi swap is usually one to two days. Converting from a regular boiler with tanks to a combi takes longer.
