Boiler repair in Brighton and Hove

Tell us the fault code or what the boiler is doing, and we pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who work across Brighton and Hove.

Three quarters of Brighton and Hove homes heat with mains gas and nothing else, so a dead boiler usually means no heating and no hot water at all. Only an engineer on the Gas Safe Register may open the gas side of the appliance, and you can check any engineer's number on the register before they start.

How homes are heated
75.3% of households heat with mains gas only, 11.9% with electricity only and 1.6% from a heat network. 2.3% (2,844 homes) have no central heating, and oil-only heating covers about 200 homes. Source
Water hardness
Southern Water says most of the water it supplies is hard because it comes from underground chalk aquifers with high levels of calcium. Source

What to try before you call

Look at the pressure gauge first. If the needle sits below about 1 bar with the heating off, the boiler may have locked out to protect itself, and our boiler pressure guide shows how to top it up.

Check the thermostat batteries and the timer settings, then try a single reset using the button on the boiler. If the same fault code comes straight back, stop resetting and book the repair.

Gas smell? Not a repair job

Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anything else. Open windows, leave switches alone and get out if the smell is strong. The emergency team makes the supply safe; a repair comes later.

Faults linked to hard water

Chalk water from Southern Water leaves scale on the hottest surfaces. In combis the signs are hot water that runs hot then cold, a boiler that bangs or kettles, and a diverter valve that sticks.

Ask the engineer whether a descale or a new plate heat exchanger is the fix, and what a scale reducer on the cold feed would cost. On a boiler over ten years old, get a replacement figure as well and compare it with our new boiler cost guide.

Renting? The landlord pays

With 32.7% of the city's homes privately let, plenty of breakdowns are a landlord's responsibility. Report the fault in writing, give the date and any code on the display, and keep a copy. A landlord must keep gas appliances in safe working order.

Brighton homes and what they need

Flats in converted Regency and Victorian houses

A shared house split into flats can have several boilers flued close together on one rear wall. If your boiler cuts out on windy days near the seafront, mention it: the flue terminal position may be part of the fault.

Victorian terraces on the hills

Hilltop terraces can have long pipe runs and radiators at different heights. After a repair that drains the system, air collects in the highest radiators, which our guide on bleeding a radiator covers.

Interwar semis in the northern suburbs

If the hot water works but the heating doesn't, a regular or system boiler may have a failed pump or motorised valve rather than a boiler fault. Describe both symptoms when you book.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Brighton work across areas including Hove, Kemptown, Hanover, Preston Park, Patcham, Withdean, Hollingbury, Woodingdean, Rottingdean and Portslade.
