Boiler repair and gas engineers in Portsmouth
Describe the fault and we pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who work in Portsmouth, Southsea and the mainland suburbs.
Three in four Portsmouth homes rely on mains gas central heating with no backup. When the boiler stops, so does the hot water, and that is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Before booking, two quick checks can save you a call-out.
Portsmouth at a glance
- Water hardness
- Every Portsmouth Water supply zone averaged hard (201 to 300 mg/l) or very hard (over 300 mg/l) in 2025, ranging from 267 to 315 mg/l as calcium carbonate. The four Farlington zones averaged 279 to 294 mg/l. Source
- Renting
- 28.6% of households rented privately and 18.0% rented from the council or a housing association in 2021. Source
- How homes are heated
- 75.8% of households heat with mains gas only and 11.5% with electricity only. Oil-only heating was recorded in just 32 homes, and 2.4% (2,091) had no central heating. Source
- Landlord gas checks
- Landlords must arrange a gas safety check on every appliance and flue every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Source
Pressure and power
Check the boiler display is on and the fused spur next to it hasn't tripped. Then read the pressure gauge: most sealed systems need around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Our boiler pressure guide explains how to top up.
If the pressure keeps dropping after you top it up, there is a leak somewhere, often a weeping radiator valve or the boiler's pressure relief valve. That needs an engineer.
Hard water damage
With Portsmouth Water's zones averaging between 267 and 315 mg/l, scale is behind many combi faults here. Watch for hot water that fluctuates, a rumbling boiler, or a fault code for overheating.
Descaling or replacing the plate heat exchanger is the usual fix. On an older boiler, compare the repair price with replacement using our new boiler cost guide.
Smell gas?
Phone the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, open doors and windows and don't operate switches. A repair can wait until the emergency team has made things safe.
Tenants
If you rent, report the breakdown to your landlord or agent in writing. Private landlords must repair heating and hot water, and with 18% of households in social housing, many tenants will report to Portsmouth City Council or their housing association instead.
Portsmouth homes and what they need
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Condensate pipes running down an outside wall into a back alley can freeze in a cold snap. Pour warm water along the pipe, then reset the boiler.
Converted houses and purpose-built flats
In tower blocks, the boiler may be on a shared flue system. Tell the engineer, because some faults need the building's maintenance team involved.
1930s semis on the mainland side
If the radiators work but the hot water doesn't, the fault may be the cylinder thermostat or a zone valve rather than the boiler.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Portsmouth work across areas including Southsea, Fratton, North End, Copnor, Milton, Eastney, Hilsea, Cosham, Drayton and Farlington.
Questions people in Portsmouth ask
Do you have engineers on standby?
No. We pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your postcode, and they arrange the visit directly with you.
My boiler is over 12 years old. Repair or replace?
If the repair is a major part such as a heat exchanger or main circuit board, ask for a replacement quote too. In very hard water, an old combi that has needed one scale-related repair often needs another.
