Boiler repairs in Wolverhampton
Describe the fault and we pass it to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your area, from Tettenhall to Wednesfield.
About three in four Wolverhampton homes rely on mains gas alone. When the boiler stops, start with a few safe checks, then call a Gas Safe registered engineer if the fault doesn't clear.
Wolverhampton at a glance
- Water hardness
- Moderately hard to hard, and it varies a lot by street. Severn Trent's postcode reports for August 2025 to July 2026 give about 151 mg/l of calcium carbonate in its Wolverhampton City zone, about 211 mg/l in its Bilston zone, 269 mg/l in Essington and 274 mg/l in Penn. Source
- Who rents
- 25.2% of Wolverhampton households rent from a social landlord, 18.8% directly from the council. 19.0% rent privately. Source
Emergency first
If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Open windows, don't operate switches and turn off the gas at the meter if you can do it safely.
Things to check yourself
Read the pressure gauge when the system is cold. Between 1 and 1.5 bar is normal for most sealed systems; lower than that can lock the boiler out, and refilling from the filling loop is covered step by step in our boiler pressure guide.
Check the thermostat and timer are calling for heat and that the boiler has power. In a frost, look for a frozen condensate pipe outside and thaw it with warm water.
Hard water faults
Severn Trent zones such as Penn and Essington test above 260 mg/l, which is hard. Combis in those streets are prone to scaled plate heat exchangers and sticking diverter valves. Symptoms include hot water that surges hot and cold or a boiler that bangs and kettles.
A repair may clear it, but if the boiler is old and parts are pricey, ask for a replacement quote too. Set the two figures against the ranges in our new boiler cost guide before deciding.
If you rent
Council tenants should report the fault through the council's repairs service, not call a private engineer. Private tenants should tell their landlord in writing, with the date and any fault code, and keep a copy.
Wolverhampton homes and what they need
Interwar and post-war semis across the estates
If hot water works but radiators stay cold, a stuck motorised valve or failed pump is more likely than a boiler fault. Mention it when you book.
Victorian red brick terraces near the centre
After a repair that drains the system, front-room radiators may stay cold with trapped air. Our guide on how to bleed a radiator usually fixes it.
Low-rise and tower block flats
On a communal system, report loss of heat to the building manager first. The fault may be in the plant room, not your flat.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Wolverhampton work across areas including Tettenhall, Penn, Wednesfield, Bilston, Whitmore Reans, Finchfield, Compton, Bushbury, Fallings Park and Codsall.
Questions people in Wolverhampton ask
How quickly will someone come?
It depends on engineers covering your postcode that week. We pass on your request but don't promise arrival times.
Is it worth fixing a 15-year-old boiler?
Sometimes. If parts are still available and the rest of the boiler is sound, a repair can buy years. If the heat exchanger has failed, replacement usually makes more sense.
