Boiler repair in Stoke-on-Trent
Tell us what's wrong and we pass your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover your postcode, from Tunstall to Trentham.
Stoke-on-Trent relies on gas more than most cities: 81.7% of households heat with mains gas only. A broken boiler usually means no heating and no hot water until an engineer has been.

- It depends which end of the city you're in. Gas emergency
If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999 straight away. Open doors and windows, don't switch anything on or off, and turn off the meter if it's safe.
Try these first
Look at the pressure gauge. On a cold sealed system, about 1 to 1.5 bar is typical. If it's lower, the boiler may have locked out; our boiler pressure guide shows how to refill it.
Make sure the thermostat is turned up and the timer is on. In a cold snap, a frozen condensate pipe outside is a common cause of lockouts. Warm water poured along it, followed by a reset, often gets the boiler going.
Hard water damage in the south
Combis in the Longton and Stoke South zones, where Severn Trent measures about 245 mg/l, suffer more scale damage than those in the north of the city. Look for hot water that swings hot and cold, a boiler that rumbles or kettles, or reduced flow at the taps.
Engineers may descale or replace the plate heat exchanger or diverter valve. On an older boiler, compare the repair cost with replacement using our new boiler cost guide.
Tenants
Council tenants make up about 15% of households, and they should report boiler faults to the council's repairs service. Private tenants should tell the landlord in writing, noting the date and any fault code.
Stoke-on-Trent homes and what they need
Interwar and postwar semis
Heating that won't start while hot water works points to a zone valve or pump, especially on older regular systems.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces across the six towns
After a repair that drains the system, front rooms may stay cold with trapped air. Our guide on how to bleed a radiator helps.
Newer estates and regeneration housing
Loft-mounted boilers with long condensate runs are prone to freezing. Ask the engineer about lagging or rerouting the pipe.

Questions people in Stoke-on-Trent ask
When can someone come?
That depends on engineers covering your postcode. We pass on your request but don't control their diaries or promise times.
My boiler is 12 years old. Repair or replace?
If the heat exchanger has failed or parts are scarce, replacement is often better value. For a pump or fan, repair usually makes sense.
