Boiler repair in Derby
We pass your fault to Gas Safe registered engineers who cover Derby. A few safe checks could save you a call-out.
81.3% of Derby homes heat with mains gas alone, a higher share than in Birmingham or Wolverhampton. When the boiler stops, most households lose both heating and hot water, so it helps to know what to try first and what to leave to the engineer.
Derby at a glance
- Water hardness
- Moderately hard across the city. Severn Trent's postcode reports for August 2025 to July 2026 give about 182 mg/l of calcium carbonate in the Alvaston zone, 184 mg/l in Chaddesden, 191 mg/l in Mackworth and 198 mg/l in Little Eaton. The water is a blend from Severn Trent's East Midlands network. Source
- Tenure
- 59.0% of Derby households own their home. 21.3% rent privately and 18.8% rent from a social landlord. Source
If you smell gas
Phone 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service. Open windows, don't use switches or naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if it's safe to reach.
Before calling an engineer
Check the pressure gauge. With the system cold, 1 to 1.5 bar is normal for most sealed systems. Below that the boiler may lock out; our boiler pressure guide shows how to top up from the filling loop.
Check the thermostat is calling for heat and the timer is on. In freezing weather, a fault code and gurgling may mean the condensate pipe outside has frozen. Warm water poured along it usually clears it.
Faults linked to Derby's water
Severn Trent puts Derby's main supply zones between 182 and 198 mg/l, at the hard end of moderately hard. Combis here show scale-related faults over time: a sticking diverter valve, fluctuating hot water and noisy heat exchangers.
Descaling or replacing the plate heat exchanger often fixes it. On an older boiler, compare the repair with a replacement using our new boiler cost guide.
Renting
Boiler repairs in rented homes are the landlord's job. Report the fault in writing with the date and any fault code. Housing association and council tenants should use their landlord's repairs line.
Derby homes and what they need
Suburban semis from the 1930s to the 1960s
If hot water works but the heating doesn't, the problem may be a zone valve or pump rather than the boiler itself.
Modern estates on the outskirts
Boilers in garages or lofts are more exposed to frost. Insulating the condensate pipe helps avoid winter lockouts.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Derby work across areas including Allestree, Darley Abbey, Mickleover, Littleover, Chaddesden, Normanton, Alvaston, Oakwood, Spondon and Chellaston.
Questions people in Derby ask
Can someone come today?
That depends on engineers covering your postcode. We pass on your request but don't run our own vans or set arrival times.
Repair or replace?
If a big part has failed on a boiler over ten years old, replacement is often better value. Ask for both prices.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
A slow drop over days usually means a small leak somewhere in the system, often at a radiator valve, or a failing pressure relief valve that drips through the pipe outside. Topping up keeps it going, but an engineer needs to find the leak.
