Boiler repair and gas engineers in Birmingham
Tell us the fault and we pass it to Gas Safe registered engineers who work in your part of Birmingham. Try two quick checks before you book.
About three in four Birmingham households rely on mains gas alone, so a dead boiler usually means no heating and no hot water at once. Only an engineer on the Gas Safe Register may work on the boiler, its gas supply or its flue. Ask for their ID card and check it lists the type of appliance you have.
Birmingham at a glance
- Water hardness
- Moderately soft across most of the city. Severn Trent's postcode reports for August 2025 to July 2026 give about 52 to 58 mg/l of calcium carbonate in zones such as Bordesley, Harborne and Kings Heath, and about 85 mg/l in the Hagley zones. Most of it is Welsh mountain water treated at works in Birmingham. Source
- Who rents
- 23.5% of Birmingham households rent from a social landlord, 13.8% directly from the council. Another 22.6% rent privately. Source
- Landlord gas checks
- Landlords must have a Gas Safe registered engineer check every gas appliance and flue every 12 months, hand tenants a copy of the record and keep it for 2 years. Source
Smell gas? Do this first
Phone the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it safely, open windows and don't use switches, flames or doorbells. They make the supply safe; the boiler repair comes after.
Quick checks
Look at the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. With the heating cold, most sealed systems want 1 to 1.5 bar. Below that many boilers lock out, and our boiler pressure guide shows how to top up.
If the display shows a fault code during a frost and you hear gurgling, the plastic condensate pipe outside may have frozen. Pour warm water, not boiling, along it and reset the boiler.
What usually goes wrong here
Severn Trent rates most of the city's supply as moderately soft, so the scaled-up heat exchangers common in hard water areas are less often the cause. More typical repairs are failed fans, pumps, diverter valves, ignition leads and pressure sensors, plus blockages from black sludge in older systems.
If the boiler is past ten years old, ask for the repair price next to a rough replacement price. Our new boiler cost guide gives national ranges to compare with.
Renters: report it, don't fix it
Repairs to a rented home's boiler are the landlord's job. Report it in writing with the date and any fault code. Council tenants, about one in seven Birmingham households, should use the council's repairs line rather than calling an engineer themselves.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Birmingham work across areas including Edgbaston, Moseley, Kings Heath, Harborne, Erdington, Selly Oak, Hall Green, Sutton Coldfield, Acocks Green and Handsworth.
Questions people in Birmingham ask
How soon can an engineer come?
That depends on which engineers cover your postcode and how busy they are. We pass your request on; we don't run vans or promise times.
Is a repair worth it on an old boiler?
If the part costs a large share of a new boiler, or spares are no longer made, replacing it can be the better spend. Get both prices first.
