Boiler service in Sheffield

An annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer keeps your boiler safe and efficient. We pass your request to engineers covering your Sheffield postcode.

Sheffield is lucky with its water. Yorkshire Water's latest results rate the main city zones as soft, with as little as 7.8 mg/l of calcium around Crookesmoor and Broomhall. Scale, the big enemy of boilers in the Midlands and the south, is a minor issue here. That changes the focus of a service rather than removing the need for one.

In a soft water city, the engineer's attention goes to combustion, seals, the condensate system and the state of the water inside the heating circuit.

What soft water means for your boiler

You won't usually need a scale reducer on a combi in Sheffield. Heat exchangers stay cleaner for longer on the hot water side.

The heating side is a different matter. A sealed system relies on inhibitor to stop the radiators corroding from inside. Ask the engineer to test the inhibitor level with a dip test and dose it if it is low. Black water when you bleed a radiator means corrosion is already happening.

Access on steep streets

Many terraces in Walkley, Crookes and Heeley are built into the hillside. A flue that exits high on a rear wall above a steep drop can be hard to see, let alone reach. The engineer must check the flue terminal, so tell them in advance if it needs a ladder or a view from a neighbour's garden.

Rented homes

Landlords must have a Gas Safe engineer check every gas appliance and flue each year and give tenants the record. Sheffield City Council rents to 15.6% of households and, as their landlord, arranges the yearly gas checks itself. Council tenants should let its engineers in when the appointment letter arrives.

Private landlords, who house 18.7% of the city, should book a full service alongside the safety check.

Sheffield homes and what they need

Victorian terraces on the hillsides

Cellars are common, and some boilers sit in them. Clear a path and make sure there is light, as engineers need to see the flue and gas pipe runs clearly.

Interwar and postwar semis

Semis in Hillsborough and Ecclesall often still have a regular boiler with a cylinder and loft tanks. The tanks and the feed pipe should be checked at the same visit.

Large stone villas in the western suburbs

Big villas may have two boilers or a large floor-standing model in a cellar. Allow extra time, and ask for every appliance on the gas supply to be checked.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Sheffield work across areas including Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Sharrow, Heeley, Dore and Stocksbridge.

Questions people in Sheffield ask

Do I still need a yearly service if the water is soft?

Yes. Soft water helps with scale, but burners, seals, fans and flues still wear. A yearly service is also usually a warranty condition.
