Boiler service in Doncaster
Book an annual boiler service with a Gas Safe registered engineer. We pass your request to engineers covering your Doncaster postcode.
Sheffield and Doncaster share a county but not a water supply. Sheffield's reservoir water is soft, while Yorkshire Water rates Doncaster's as hard: its 2024 figures put the main town zone at 109.3 mg/l of calcium, and the zones covering Bessacarr, Bentley and Conisbrough are similar. If you have moved down the M18, expect your kettle, taps and boiler to scale up faster than you are used to.
That makes the yearly service more than a box-tick here. It is the one visit where an engineer looks at what hard water is doing inside your boiler.
Doncaster at a glance
- Water hardness
- Hard. Yorkshire Water's 2024 results rate the Doncaster supply zone as hard (109.3 mg/l calcium), as well as the Armthorpe zone covering Bessacarr and Wheatley (103 mg/l) and the Carcroft zone covering Bentley, Sprotbrough and Conisbrough (107.6 mg/l). Source
- Tenure
- 62.8% of Doncaster households owned their home in 2021, a third of them outright. 19.4% rented privately and 17.0% rented socially. Source
What hard water does
Every time you run a hot tap on a combi, mains water passes through the plate heat exchanger and is heated in seconds. Calcium drops out of the water as it heats and coats the plates. Over a few years the boiler has to work harder for the same shower, hot water temperature wobbles, and in the end the boiler throws a fault.
Ask the engineer to measure the hot water flow and temperature rise, and to note them on the service record. A steady fall from one year to the next is the clearest sign scale is building.
On the day
Expect the engineer to remove the case, inspect the burner, fan and electrodes, clean the condensate trap, run a flue gas analysis and test the gas pressure and safety devices. They should check the flue from the boiler to the terminal outside.
Clear the cupboard around the boiler and have the logbook ready. Most manufacturers need a yearly service recorded to keep the warranty valid.
Letting a home in Doncaster
About one in five Doncaster households rents privately. Landlords must have every gas appliance and flue checked by a Gas Safe engineer every 12 months and give tenants a copy of the gas safety record. That check confirms safety on the day; a full service on the same visit keeps the boiler running between checks.
Doncaster homes and what they need
Interwar and postwar semis
With 45.5% of households in semis, this is the typical Doncaster service. Many still have a cylinder and loft tanks, so ask for the cylinder thermostat and valves to be checked too.
Red-brick terraces in town and the former pit villages
Terraces in Balby, Hexthorpe or Mexborough often have a combi in the kitchen with a rear flue into a yard. Make sure the engineer can get to the terminal outside.
Bungalows
Boilers in bungalows are sometimes in the loft. A loft boiler needs safe access, boarding and lighting before an engineer will work on it.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Doncaster work across areas including Bessacarr, Balby, Armthorpe, Bentley, Wheatley, Hatfield, Thorne, Mexborough, Conisbrough and Tickhill.
Questions people in Doncaster ask
Should I fit a scale reducer on my combi?
In Doncaster's hard water, it is worth asking about. A small in-line scale reducer on the cold feed slows the build-up. The engineer can tell you whether one suits your boiler.
