Heat pump installation in Bradford

An MCS certified installer works out your home's heat loss, designs the system and applies for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

Heat pumps work in Bradford, but stone houses need more preparation than modern ones. Solid stone walls leak heat, and a heat pump works best when the house holds on to it. The survey should start with insulation, not the unit.

Getting a stone house ready

Loft insulation, draught-proofing and, where possible, internal wall insulation on the coldest rooms make the biggest difference. Then the installer sizes the heat pump and works out which radiators need upgrading.

Many Bradford semis built between the wars have cavity walls. If the cavities are empty, filling them first can cut the size of heat pump you need.

Planning, conservation and Saltaire

On most houses one unit up to 1.5 cubic metres is permitted development if it meets the MCS noise standard. In a conservation area it can't go on a wall or roof facing the road. In Saltaire, where most buildings are listed, you need listed building consent before any unit goes up.

Grants in Bradford

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 off an air source heat pump, and there's no income test. Bradford Council also has £6.33 million for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can include heat pumps for lower-income households in homes rated EPC D to G.

Where heat pumps fit in Bradford

Stone-built terraces and back-to-backs

A through terrace with a back yard may have room for a unit. Back-to-backs rarely do. Insulation and better controls may be the realistic upgrade.

Interwar and post-war semis

The easiest Bradford fit: a garden, often a side path, and room for a cylinder. Fill the cavity before the heat loss survey.

Large Victorian stone houses

Big heat loss means a bigger unit or two units, and larger radiators. Get a full design before you commit, and compare it with a hybrid set-up.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Bradford work across areas including Heaton, Manningham, Shipley, Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon, Idle, Eccleshill, Thornton and Wibsey.

Questions people in Bradford ask

Will a heat pump keep a stone house warm?

Yes, if it's designed from a proper heat loss calculation and the radiators are sized for lower flow temperatures. An undersized system is what gives heat pumps a bad name. Our air source heat pumps guide explains the basics.

How noisy is the outdoor unit?

Modern units are roughly as loud as a fridge at a few metres. On close-packed terrace streets the installer has to show it meets the MCS noise limit at the neighbour's window, which can rule out some positions.
