Air source heat pump installation in Leeds
An MCS certified installer surveys the house, sizes the system and claims the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you.
Leeds has a big stock of houses with gardens, which is what a heat pump needs. Semis and detached homes together make up more than half of the district. The harder cases are the back-to-backs and the city-centre blocks, where there's no obvious place for the outdoor unit.
Leeds at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 76.7% of Leeds households heat with mains gas only. 10.7% (36,550 homes) use electricity only, 0.5% a heat network, and 0.2% (660 homes) oil only. 2.2% have no central heating. Source
- Housing types
- 37.5% of Leeds households live in a semi, 25.0% in a terrace and 17.5% in a purpose-built block of flats, with another 3.9% in converted or shared houses and other converted buildings. Source
- Heat network
- Leeds PIPES carries heat from waste at the Cross Green recycling and energy recovery facility to almost 2,000 properties, including the council flats at Lincoln Green and civic buildings in the city centre. Source
- Local grant
- Leeds City Council was allocated £5,963,439 to deliver the Warm Homes: Local Grant, for privately owned homes rated EPC D to G, usually with household income of £36,000 or less. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 50% of homes with an EPC in Leeds are rated band D or below (median score 68, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Which Leeds homes suit one
The best fit is a semi or detached house with filled cavity walls, a decent loft and space for a hot water cylinder. Plenty of 1930s semis in Roundhay, Moortown and Cross Gates fit that pattern.
Older solid-walled terraces can work too, but expect the survey to call for bigger radiators in some rooms and probably insulation first. A heat pump runs at lower water temperatures than a gas boiler, so it needs more radiator surface to heat the same room.
Planning and siting
On a house, one unit up to 1.5 cubic metres is usually permitted development, provided it meets the MCS noise standard. In a conservation area it can't face a highway. Leeds has many, from Headingley to Chapel Allerton, so check before you pick a spot at the front. Listed buildings need consent.
Money towards it
In Leeds, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air source heat pump, and there's no check on income. Leeds City Council also has £5.96 million to deliver the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund heat pumps for lower-income owners and tenants of private landlords in homes rated EPC D to G.

Heat pumps in Leeds housing
Victorian terraces and back-to-backs
A through terrace with a back yard can take a unit against the rear wall. A true back-to-back usually has nowhere to put one, so look at insulation and a heat network or electric option instead.
1930s semis
The side passage or back garden gives room for the unit, and the airing cupboard can often take a cylinder. Get the cavity and loft checked before the heat loss survey.
City-centre flats
Individual heat pumps are rare in blocks. If your building is on Leeds PIPES or a communal system, any change is the building owner's decision.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Leeds work across areas including Headingley, Roundhay, Horsforth, Chapel Allerton, Morley, Pudsey, Garforth, Rothwell, Otley and Wetherby.
Questions people in Leeds ask
Will it cope with a Leeds winter?
Yes, if it's sized from a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation. Units are rated to work well below freezing. Our air source heat pumps guide explains how efficiency changes as it gets colder.
Do I need a hot water cylinder?
Almost always, because a heat pump can't heat water on demand like a combi. A semi with an airing cupboard usually has the room. A small terrace may need the cylinder in the loft or a slimline model.
