Heat pump installation in Peterborough
An MCS certified installer works out your heat loss, specifies the system and applies for the grant on your behalf. We pass your request to installers covering Peterborough.
Peterborough has two groups for whom heat pumps make the strongest sense. One is the 2,700 or so off-gas homes on oil or LPG, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 plus a £1,500 bonus until March 2027. The other is the large number of detached and semi-detached homes with gardens big enough for an outdoor unit.
The council also takes part in the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund air source heat pumps for eligible households.

Local grant: who to contact
Peterborough's Warm Homes: Local Grant runs through the Cambridgeshire Energy Retrofit Partnership until the end of March 2028. It offers up to £15,000 for measures such as insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps.
You need an eligible postcode, household income under £36,000 or a means-tested benefit, and a home rated EPC D to G that you own or rent privately. Aran Insulation covers most of the city. 0800 Repair handles PE1, though the council has said it had paused new applications, so check the council page for the latest.
Survey and design
The installer calculates heat loss room by room, sizes the heat pump and checks your radiators. Some rooms may need larger radiators to stay warm at the lower flow temperatures heat pumps use.
Most installations on houses are permitted development, as long as the unit is under 1.5 cubic metres and at least a metre from the boundary.
Leaving oil behind
Replacing an oil boiler frees the space taken by the tank and removes the risk of leaks and theft. Ask the installer to include tank decommissioning in the quote.
Peterborough homes and what they need
New town townships and modern estates
Homes from the 1970s and 80s often have cavity walls that may already be filled. Check before the survey, as it affects the size of heat pump needed.
Older terraces in Millfield and Woodston
Small yards may limit where the unit goes. A wall-mounted bracket or a compact model can help.
Interwar and postwar semis
Plenty of room for a unit at the side or back, and space for a cylinder. Often a good candidate.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Peterborough work across areas including Bretton, Orton, Werrington, Hampton, Stanground, Millfield, Dogsthorpe, Woodston, Eye and Yaxley.
